Network Storage Synology DS413j Review

NAS Synology DS413j is considered to be a perfect solution for home-based platforms. Its elaborated performance provides for fast and efficient completion of any set task, while its loud design might become an embellishment for any home system. Unlike other NAS solutions developed by Synology, DS413j is controlled by an updated software complex DSM 4.1 that features a range of innovations useful for individual and corporate customers.

Design and Ergonomics

NAS Synology DS413j is a four-disk storage station, housed in a white patent plastic with a gray stuffing on the clipboard. The rear panel is removable as it serves a basic means for the installation of disk drives. The frontal panel contains six LED indicators which signify about the activity of network interface, emerging errors, disk drive operation. Large 'Power' button is located in the central part; the upper and lower parts of the panel are alloted for ventilation grids.

All interfaces and sockets found their places on the bottom part of the rear panel: network interface, Reset button, a couple of USB 2.0 ports, and an input for the power supply adapter. The removable panel features a couple of ventilation grids which cover two 80 mm fans; the fans blow into the airflow throughout the casing and blow off the heat from the clipboard out to the rear ventilation holes.

Network storage Synology DS413j is delivered in a white cardbox that features a list of essential components, involving warranty, CD with brand software, power supply adapter, power cable, network cable, fixing kit for the drives, and plastic fixture for power cable management.

Specifications

This NAS model is based on ARM processor Marvell Kirkwood 88F6282 that operates at 1.6 GHz frequency. It employs 16-bit interface of the integrated DDR3-1066 MHz memory, gigabit network interface, and SATA II interface. This ARM processor is covered by a small heatsink which provides for a better cooling effect. Memory modules are introduced by a couple of Hynix H5TQ2G83BFR-H9C chips. SATA facility is presented by Marvell 88SX7042 controller that supports up to four SATA interfaces, while network controller Marvel 88E1116R is destined to work with a single Ethernet port only. Other specifications of DS413j are listed below:
— admissible HDD formats: four 3.5-inch drives with SATA II interface or four 2.5-inch drives with SATA/SSD interface;
— power consumption: 31.5W in operational mode, 7.6W in standby mode;
— file system: internal hard drives: EXT4, external drives: EXT3, EXT4, FAT, NTFS;
— RAID: Synology Hybrid RAID, JBOD, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10;
— protocols: BitTorrent, HTTP, AFP, FTP, CIFS;
— clients: Mac OS X, Windows, Ubuntu.

DSM 4.1 Interface

Synology calls its new software development DSM 4.1 quite beneficial and efficient in the accomplishment of home-based and corporate tasks. First of all, upgraded software, like the majority of analogous products, allows the user to create an individual cloud for unimpeded access to the data stored in NAS via the Internet. This function is realized by means of 'Cloud Station' section which offers file sharing between the PC and NAS in capacities of up to 5GB, data synchronization with mobile devices, and compatibility with proxy-servers.

Mail Server client now supports SMTP protocol which serves a means of full-fledged mailing service with dedicated spam-filter, traffic tracing options, auto-responder, and other options. Syslog service has also been upgraded to provide more productive environment. The manager is able to establish Internet connection via proxy-server; data sharing might be realized via FXP and SFTP protocols. There are special 'Traffic Control' and 'Speed Limit' options which restrict the usage of resources within the network and set a fixed sequence of available channels.

To continue, DSM 4.1 features absolutely updated PhotoStation, AudioStation and VideoStation applications. Hence, the first two applications are already known to NAS users, while VideoStation is a new facility. Its main target is to store video files and give access to them for browsing. VideoStation scans drives' spacing and detects video files of predetermined formats; further on, the user is capable to sort all file types according to different parameters.
