‘Cine’ Monitor Asus MX299Q Review

The emergence of 4K displays marked the beginning of a new era in PC monitors market. Despite the unquestionable viewing facilities, those products so far remain beyond the budget for many customers. So, the development of more affordable but ultra-modern solutions is at the height today. Asus was always differentiated by offbeat approaches to the design and framework of all products. Hence, the appearance of MX299Q monitor was quite an expected move. This model is peculiar not only by an unusual ‘cine’ design but also by striking facilities. Let’s get proof of it.

Specifications

Asus MX299Q boasts the following specifications:
— panel: type – AH-IPS (LM290WWI-SSAI), coverage – Hard Coating 3H (anti-glare), backlit – W-LED, diagonal – 29 inches, aspect ratio — 21:9, response time – 5 ms, resolution – 2560x1080, viewing angles – 178/178 degrees (H/V), brightness – 300 cd/m2, number of displayed colors – 16.7 m, contrast – 1000:1/80M:1 (static/dynamic);
— PSU: external;
— stand ergonomics: display tilt from -5 to +20 degrees;
— external interfaces: audio in/out, HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI-D;
— sound: two built-in Sonic Master speakers (3W each);
— other features: MHL Support, sensor controls, Splendid modes support, ICEpower MobileSound, QuickFit, Trace Free, Smart Contrast.

Design and Ergonomics

Monitor MX299Q features a stylish bezel-less design and a cine-like aspect ratio. Its case is a combination of various materials, including glossy plastic, dull plastic, brushed aluminum, and chrome-plated inlets. Central stand is permanently fixed to the display; this implies the absence of VESA bracket and, as a result, — the impossibility to use the product as a wall screen. The base comes with a large notch that adds style to the overall framework. Unfortunately, the developers did not consider an efficient cable management; thus, the users will have to cope with the ‘cable mess’ individually.

The built-in speakers are located at both sides of the display. The rear facet is made of a glossy plastic that is easily imposed to scratches. The frontal and side facets employ more thought-out materials: metal and dull plastic. The assembly can be truly called ‘excellent’; there is no scraping noise or evident offsetting, as the adjustment is ideal.

Traditionally, the rear facet accommodates a set of interfaces with backwards orientation. Here one may find a power socket, a pair of audio slots (In and Out), and three different video ports: DisplayPort, DVI-D, and HDMI with MHL support. Stand ergonomics is not so bright. It’s only possible to change the screen tilt within the ranges of -5 to +20 degrees.

The nominal delivery set is rich in the following components: Quick Start Guide, a power cable, an external power supply unit, an audio cable for the connection to PC, DVI-D cable, HDMI cable, and HDMI to mini-HDMI cable.

Menu and Settings

Control process is totally relied on six sensor keys, located at the bottom-right side of the display. A pair of power indicators found their places right to those keys. With the purpose to facilitate the control in the dark, Asus has added dedicated inlets that imitate physical buttons; nonetheless, they function as pointers to the sensor keys. Their responsiveness is estimated at high level. Quick access options embrace volume and brightness adjustment, enabling of QuickFit nets, switching of a signal source, and switching of pre-installed ‘Splendid’ modes.

The main menu employs a standard interface. The first tab, called ‘Splendid’, allows for the selection of a necessary mode and clearing their settings by default. ‘Color’ section is dedicated to the brightness, contrast, and saturation adjustment, as well as color temperature tuning (three available Color Temp. presets). ‘Image’ tab provides for the adjustment of sharpness, activation of dynamic contrast, alteration of aspect ratio control modes, and tuning of the matrix force impact. It must be underlined that some of those settings are accessible only on ‘Splendid’ mode activation.

To continue, ‘Sound’ tab identifies the source of sound and facilitates the tuning of volume. The final section, called ‘System Setup’, hides not so demanded settings. For instance, it allows the user to activate Eco preset that reduces the brightness to the lowest level; it also allows for clearing all earlier settings by default. The sub-section ‘OSD Setup’ helps in adjusting the menu design (including DDC/CI interface deactivation). ‘Information’ tab conventionally unveils the data about the monitor’s specifications.

In use

Asus MX299Q demonstrates quite splendid performance and is able to offer prime-class viewing experience. Hence, color gamut makes up: AdobeRGB – 69.2% and 71% after calibration, sRGB – 94.6% and 96.7% after calibration. At the same time, the monitor consumer very little power: 41 W – by default, maximal index – 43 W, 21 W – on 100 cd/m2 brightness, 29 W – on 200 cd/m2 brightness.
