DAS CFI-B8253JDGG Review

The majority of people are probably familiar with NAS-servers, their destination and facilities. DAS-drive is a completely unique device, targeted specifically at business owners and home enthusiasts. This is a multi-functional device developed for the connection directly to the host-systems which can be represented by home PC, router with USB interface, server or some other gadget. CFI Group, primarily known by PSU development and supply, has introduced an innovative storage solution in the form of its DAS CFI-B8253JDGG model. This product is called to rival NAS competitors in price range which is quite moderate if compared with the general market prices. The major destination of DAS is office employment, however it can be used for home purposes as well.

General Characteristics and Key Specifications

DAS CFI-B8253JDGG is a fault-tolerant data storage system based on RAID controller which offers a number of facilities for business and home use. It serves an efficient tool for the improvement of security measures connected with data storage, sharing and systematization. This device is able to ensure high-speed data sharing while storing or local backup activities, and maximal performance while working with various data.

The motherboard implemented in DAS is assembled on JMB394 chips that work with practically all contemporary array types of 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10 levels. Except for above mentioned arrays, this model supports three more types: Large, Clone and Clean. Large array is capable to offer the most enormous disk volume capacity; Clone array is intended on those customers who crave for the heightened data safety, since all the files are 'cloned' to all the integrated disks simultaneously. Clean mode does not belong to RAID arrays at all, because each of the disks goes as a separate volume. Hot swapping of hard drives is enabled at RAID1, RAID3, RAID5, RAID10 and Clone configurations. The other specifications of DAS CFI-B8253JDGG can be listed as following:
— availability of embedded PSU;
— support of SATA II and SATA I hard drives; compatibility with SATA II and SATA I host-controllers;
— compatibility with host-devices equipped with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports;
— possibility to install hard drives in free succession;
— availability of cache system with inverted write sequence for RAID3/5/10;
— user-friendly interface and clear navigation.

Design and Ergonomics

DAS CFI-B8253JDGG is developed according to the standard design templates. This model has got metallic casing with plastic strips on the clipboard. The clipboard is covered by the aerated doors with a metallic grid. LED indicators are located under the frontal door; they are destined to notify the customer about the hard drives' operation, malfunctions in RAID array activity, and connectivity to the PSU. The larger part of the rear board is covered by a grid which hides a massive 120 mm fan. The bottom right-most part accommodates one more fan embedded into a separate PSU. Moreover, the rear plate is furnished with a slot for power adapter, eSATA and USB 3.0 sockets. One more peculiar feature is the availability of a module with three switches which activate this or that RAID array.

The initial delivery set consists of various dedicated components, including: power cable, eSATA cables, USB 3.0 cables, fixing kit for hard drives, and planks for the rear plate of PC with the emulator of eSATA port and interface SATA cable. The latter is considered to be a privilege of this model as not every manufacturer is willing to provide components for the adjustment of other devices.

Framework

The retiform doors on the clipboard hide a vertical range of slides for five HDD. The slides are made of metal, except for the external handles which are made of plastic. Disk bays are predestined specifically for 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch drives. There are no security locks that would prevent the negligent drives ejection. The integrated PSU boasts its own casing which is developed by CFI Group (CFI-250AT-U1 model). Upon the whole, the framework of this model resembles any other DAS, with metallic casing and motherboard fixed on the racks. Nevertheless, no other DAS system can boast such attractive price and multi-purpose destination.
