Motherboard ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional Review

Requirements of customers towards computer hardware differ relying on their needs. People with modest desires tend to gather systems with average specifications, while gamers and enthusiasts try to wring every possible bit, MB, GB, etc., from their PCs and hardware. Motherboard integration is usually given a special attention, since it will directly influence the overall performance. ASRock understands the desire of people with heightened demands, primarily gamers, and offers an efficient solution in the form of motherboard ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional that will be a perfect match for high-end systems within middle-sized chassis.

Design and Integration

The application of black-red color scheme is supposed to be a distinctive feature of Fatal1ty series. At the first glimpse the customer won't see any extraordinary approaches in design; nevertheless more close look will unveil all the facilities ASRock motherboard offers. The first distinctive feature is digital converter of CPU power supply that works according to 16+8 scheme; its warming components are covered by two fins, while the heat pipe connects them with the third additional fin in the middle of the board. All the fins, including the fourth one on the logics kit chip, employ a solid screw fixture. There is a possibility to install a high-end cooler destined for LGA775 CPU; it is fixed due to the available fixtures around the CPU slot. Such technology is codenamed ASRock Combo Cooler Option. The motherboard accommodates six sockets to connect the coolers. This enables the monitoring and control over the fan rotation speed.

The rear plate of the motherboard contains the whole set of elements: universal PS/2 socket for the connection of keyboard and mouse, video outputs HDMI and DisplayPort, six USB 2.0 and six USB 3.0 sockets (four of them are based on EtronTech EJ188H controller, while the other two are empowered due to Intel Z77 Express logics), clear CMOS button, eSATA port 6 Gbit/sec, optical S/PDIF and five audio slots, a couple of local network sockets, and IEEE1394 FireWire port (based on VIA VT6330 controller).

All other specification can be dwindled to:
— memory type and volume: DDR3 DIMM, two-channel architecture DDR3 2800-1066 SDRAM, maximal volume capacity: 32 GB;
— expansion slots: a single PCI-E 2.0 x 16 (x4), a couple of PCI, two PCI-E 3.0 x16, and two PCI-E 2.0 x1;
— form-factor: ATX;
— network controller: two gigabit Broadcom BCM57781;
— audio controller: eight-channel HD audio codec Realtek ALC898;
— additional drives controllers: a couple of ASMedia ASM1061 (6 Gb/sec);
— multi-GPU support: 3-Way CrossFireX, AMD Quad CrossFireX, CrossFireX Nvidia Quad SLI;
— availability of fans: six fans, two of them four-contact.

Delivery Set

The nominal delivery set of ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional boasts a number of useful components. Those components are standard, however their availability in the initial kit saves customers from extra spending. Thereby, one can find: CD with software and drivers, multi-language user manual, rear plate shield, six Serial ATA cables with metallic latches, bridge for the connection of two graphics cards in Nvidia SLI mode, two adapters for the connection of power supply to SATA devices, and module with two USB 3.0 sockets.

BIOS Facilities

Once after the entry, the customer will see 'Main' section that displays basic data about the system. Subsection 'System Browser' highlights the motherboard integration; it is possible to click on any element and get a detailed description of it. 'OC Tweaker' section contains all chief settings and overclocking options. The upper part is dedicated to the automatic or manual settings of CPU overclocking. The lower part is destined for the adjustment of three BIOS profiles. The availability of digital power system allows selecting the most appropriate level of counteraction against power supply fluctuations within the CPU under loading.

'Advanced' section empowers the adjustment of any additional parameters of the system. 'Instant Flash' system is used for the firmware upgrade; it also accomplishes the analysis of connected USB-drives and then highlights the list of compatible updates. 'H/W Monitor' enables the monitoring over voltages, temperatures and fan rotation speeds. 'Boot' section is designated for the setup of parameters on startup activity.
