Graphics Card HIS 7850 IceQ X Turbo X Review

The number of graphics solutions designed by HIS cannot be figured from a cursory calculation only. Indeed, the company's product line counts dozens of cards destined at various audiences, with various needs and budgets. Take HIS HD 7850 series alone: it consists of ten models (three with 1GB memory and seven with 2GB memory). The latest HIS 7850 IceQ X Turbo X belongs to '2GB echelon' and is distinguished by the heightened GPU and memory frequency. Upon the whole, this graphics adapter features outstanding cooling and overclocking facilities.

Design and PCB

Graphics adapter HIS 7850 IceQ X Turbo X is a standard representative of the second HD 7850 revision. It is housed on a short printed circuit board and is equipped with only a single power socket, two heatpipes and a large fan. HIS developers advanced the heatpipes outside the board to elongate its contours; nevertheless, this card can't be considered voluminous, since its width hasn't been touched at all. The top part of the card contains a grid that efficiently manages the heat; the rear panel houses 2x miniDP ports, one DVI, and one HDMI port.

The implemented printed circuit board (PCB) copies the one designed for the reference Radeon HD 7850 model. Its right side is alloted for PLL and memory power subsystem which take one phase each. The integrated PWM controller (NCP5395) is void of I2C protocol and does not contain any control elements. Thus, there is no possibility to monitor voltage parameters automatically. Its left side accommodates four GPU power supply phases. HIS didn't touch power phase controller, capacitors and Mosfet chips which preserved original standards. The overall power subsystem operates at 4+1+1 scheme (GPU/MEM/PLL).

GPU Pitcairn, designed under 28 nm technological process, is located on a textolite substrate and features 2800 million transistors. Its nominal clock frequency achieves 1250 MHz. Memory chips are soldered on the frontal part of PCB (Hynix H5GQ2H24MFR-T2C); they employ 256-bit bus and are predestined to operate at the effective frequency index of 5000 MHz.

The nominal delivery kit of HIS 7850 IceQ X Turbo X contains CD with software, dedicated drivers, CrossFireX bridge, DVI to VGA adapter, supporting fixture, and user's manual. The set is quite traditional except for the absence of power adapter.

Cooling System

The introduced cooling system consists of a single voluminous construction with a large heatsink, two fans and a cover. The bottom part of the system accommodates a joint heatsink which houses a couple of heat pipes and aluminum ribs. The cover is connected with a sink due to four screws. VRM and memory area is cooled down by a fan-forced air; unfortunately, there are no heatsink ribs alloted for them. The fans are connected by means of two-contact socket; this makes it impossible for the user to monitor the fans' rotational speed.

Overclocking

It should be mentioned that overclocking process traced in Radeon HD 7850 series is rather simple, though there are no additional algorithms which would enhance the frequency depending on loading showings. Overclocking limit greatly depends on the maximal power consumption level that, in its turn, depends on vGPU voltage; this implies that high voltage results in high TDP level. The maximal power consumption ascribed to Radeon HD 7850 is estimated at 220-250W. At the same time, GPU temperature depends upon two conditions: cooling system efficiency level and vGPU voltage index.
