Midi-Tower Chassis Corsair Obsidian 350D Review

Hardware components, supplied by Corsair, have always been treated as premium-class products. Whether it is an efficient power supply unit or high-performance RAM memory kits — all Corsair elaborations are distinguished by high quality and style. PC chassis are not an exclusion. Much talked-about Obsidian series is now supplemented with one more model – Obsidian 350D. This midi-tower case, intended for the installation of microATX/miniITX motherboards, differentiates from its colleagues by relatively compact dimensions, laconic and stylish design, as well as by an outstanding layout.

Design and Ergonomics

PC chassis Corsair Obsidian 350D is available in two design variations: with a transparent acrylic window on one of the side panels and with an entirely blind side panel. Acrylic window is fixed without any screws or claps; in order to remove it, it’s necessary to unscrew a couple of thumbscrews on the rear facet and move the window back. Like other Obsidian representatives, this chassis features a stylish black exterior; it features rather compact dimensions (210x440x450 mm) and is made of a cold-rolled steel. Both side panels are void of any ventilation sections.

The frontal panel is made of plastic, coated by a thin anodized aluminum layer with asphalt-like finish. Its top section is allotted for two 5.25-inch drive bays and a ventilation grid with an anti-dust filter. The whole frontal framework is covered by a monolithic panel that can be easily detached. This panel hides a fan that blows in cold air and distributes it inside the case.

All control buttons are located on the top section as well. Here one might find Power button, equipped with two LED backlights; the first one signalizes about power supply, while the second one – about disk system activity. In addition, the frontal panel offers a pair of USB 3.0 ports and the same number of audio ports.

The rear panel is practically identical to other PC chassis with bottom PSU localization. It houses five slots for expansion cards (covered by the detachable plugs), a notch for I/O motherboard plug, a 120 mm fan bay, and three notches for the organization of liquid-cooling system.

The top panel is notable by the availability of a special ventilation grid that supports liquid-cooling system heatsink. It can also accommodate a couple of 120/140 mm fans. The bottom panel features an anti-dust filter that can be removed on demand. The case itself rests on four plastic stems, furnished with a layer of stiff rubber to prevent sliding.

Internal Framework

The first thing that strikes the eyes is the availability of free space at the frontal section of the case; this space is intended for the installation of quite lengthy graphics cards (up to 380 mm). At the same time, Corsair reduced the number of bays for 3.5-inch drives to two items only.

The motherboard is installed by means of standard stands, preliminary fixed to the tray. PSU has got bottom part localization; it stands on a metallic pedestal but lacks any softening pads. The maximal supported length of the PSU must not exceed 180 mm. The maximal height of the supported CPU coolers must not exceed 160 mm.

The incorporated 5.25-inch bays are ready to accommodate two drives, which are mounted without any screws. The hard drive is fixed by means of sliding rails with vibration-proof pads. The case allows the installation of three 2.5-inch drives into a special plastic bay. All system cables can be hidden behind the motherboard tray.

Cooling System

PC chassis Obsidian 350D is delivered with two pre-installed fans. The first one (140x140x25 mm) is located at the frontal panel; its nominal rotational speed makes up 1000 RPM. The second ‘blow-off’ fan (120x120x25 mm) found its place at the rear panel; it runs at the nominal 1200 RPM. Both of them are powered with the help of 3-contact power socket but are void of any speed control means.

The case is ready to welcome three more fans, if there is a need in an enhanced cooling. The first additional fan of 140 mm dimensional type might be located at the front panel (to complement the pre-installed 140 mm fan). The second and the third fans of 120/140 mm type might be integrated at the top panel.

However, the most peculiar feature ascribed to this chassis model is the support of two liquid-cooling system heatsinks. As it was mentioned before, the first heatsink might be installed at the top ventilation grid, while the second one – at the frontal section.
