Midi-Tower Chassis CoolerMaster HAF XM Review

Chassis of full-tower form factor have always been considered an appropriate base for the integration of super computers. Such chassis usually have enough spacing for the installation of solid cooling systems, graphics cards, as well as several hard drives. However, full-tower means voluminous, and not everyone is ready to 'add' this chassis to the surrounding design. Thus, there appeared a perfect substitute for full-tower devices: midi-tower chassis. Despite the existing outlooks concerning midi-tower capacity, the market is replenishing with products that are called to comply with contemporary design and performance requirements. CoolerMaster HAF XM belongs to the range of midi-tower chassis which show unmatched efficiency and are ergonomic in design simultaneously.

Design and Layout

Chassis CoolerMaster HAF XM is differentiated by a singular charisma in design and comparatively compact dimensions. The chassis is designed in a restrained manner, but with an obvious demonstration of power. The casing is made of steel with dull plastic plates on the frontal and top parts. The frontal part is covered by metallic grids which contain stationary dust filters. The bottom grid on the clipboard hides 200 mm fan that promotes for the airflow production.

The middle part of the clipboard is destined for the 3.5 inch slides for hard drives. The slides are able to accommodate SSD drives, as well as 3.5 and 2.5 HD. Such layout gives customers direct access to the drives (for installation, removal or change) and saves them from the necessity to 'penetrate' into the casing. Nevertheless, CoolerMaster developers do not recommend using those slides for local disks, since there is little cooling in this part of the chassis.

The clipboard also contains three plugs for 5.25 inch bays and control panel with the standard buttons (Startup, LED activation/deactivation, and Restart buttons) and sockets (audio slots, two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 sockets). Still, this chassis is void of FireWire, Thunderbolt and eSATA interfaces.

The vast area of the top plate is designated for the metallic grid which covers bays for a couple of fans from 120 mm to 200 mm. This is also the place for the radiator of WLS. In addition, this plate contains a niche for various stuff. The rear plate is equipped with nine expansion card bays; all the bays have got punched plugs. One of the bays is predestined for the installation of modules with the additional interface sockets. The upper part of the plate accommodates a fixing space for 120 mm or 140 mm fan.

Both side plates have got extra stiffening fins that make the casing more durable and steadfast. The left plate contains a large punched area with dust filters and fixings for a couple of 140 mm fans, or a single 200 fan.

The initial delivery set includes the standard set of accessories: user manual, several screw sets, spanner wrench, one-kick bracing wire, and system loudspeaker.

Internal Framework

There is nothing unusual in the internal framework of CoolerMaster HAF XM but for an angular closure on the chassis' base. In fact, the main target of this closure is to hide PSU wires. It has a detachable framework, so can be easily removed if unnecessary. Slide racks have bee localized with space-saving opportunities in mind. Three 5.25 bays are located above X-Dock and serve the tool for the installation of optical drives.

CoolerMaster HAF XM supports motherboards of ATX, E-ATX, and Micro-ATX form-factor. The bay for the motherboard installation includes a hole, providing for the change of CPU cooler without the board removal. This bay is peculiar for the availability of a separate spacing for SSD modules on the reverse side; this is a kind of innovation, as no other chassis can boast such tool.

Temperature Condition

Testing results showed that CoolerMaster HAF XM does not lag behind its Full-Tower counterparts and provides appropriate CPU cooling; however, it still yields at cooling of hard drives and of graphics card. Certainly, the temperature did not achieve the crucial index in testing mode, but it was higher than in full-tower chassis. The decrease of temperatures can be achieved by the installation of supplementary fans on the left plate.
