PC Chassis Zalman Z12 Plus Review

Zalman is always highly praised for the launch of prime-quality and customer-friendly hardware, whether it is power supply units or PC cases. For example, a renowned Z series of cases won popularity thanks to an appropriate correlation of quality and price. With every new model, the overall amount of which now reaches 11 items, the manufacturer tried to offer some unique or improved facilities. The latest representative of Z series — PC chassis Zalman Z12 Plus – can boast not only changes in design but also changes in framework. Hence, it shows the newcomer to the best advantage.

Design

Trapezium-shaped figures found on all facets are considered to be a central design concept applied to Z12 Plus. This creates an enigmatic illusion of asymmetry. Internal and external surfaces of the case are painted in opaque black, still there are some glossy elements on the external face. The large part of the front facet consists of a perforated grid; the leftover spacing is assigned to five plugs of 5.25-inch drive bays (at the top), to control buttons (Power and Reset) and power/drive indicators (at the upper right), to standard audio slots and a couple of USB 2.0 ports (at the bottom right).

The upper facet repeats the frontal facet in miniature with a grid-like frame, a dedicated tray for placing various peripherals (flash-drive, cables, and so on), a pair of USB 3.0 ports, and dual-band rotational speed switch for fans. The left-side facet is totally blind but has got 5 mm forge for the motherboard tray. The right-side facet features trapezium-shaped acrylic window, fixed by eleven plastic fasteners.

The rear facet does not differentiate itself by any innovations. It accommodates a pre-installed 120 mm fan and two rubberized holes for liquid-cooling cables. The bottom facet looks as ordinary as it might be: it features a single bay for the installation of a supplementary fan (120/140 mm dimensional type) and a bay for PSU with a dust filter.

It should be noted that Zalman Z12 Plus is supplied with quite a voluminous delivery package that involves a detailed user’s manual, five cable couplings, two plugs for expansion cards, five screws and twenty takedown screws for HDD mounting, twenty dampers for HDD, 8-contact CPU power extension handle, twelve thumbscrews for 5.25-inch drive mounting, eleven screws for PSU and expansion cards mounting, five stands for the motherboard, as well as seventeen small cogs for the motherboard and 2.5-inch drives.

Internal Layout

PC chassis Z12 Plus is intended for the installation of ATX/micro-ATX/mini-ITX motherboards. The length of the supported graphics cards is limited to 290 mm, but in case of demounting of HDD bay the length can be extended to 300 mm. The height of the supported CPU coolers is also restricted to 163 mm. The grid-like upper frame covers a pre-installed transparent 120 mm induced-draft fan, equipped with blue LED backlit. The frontal grid covers free space for the installation of 120/140 mm fans. Initially, Zalman incorporated here 120 mm fan with blue LED, similarly to the upper fan. It runs at the maximal 1300 RPM (0.16A) and consumes 1.92W power. The fan employs sleeve bearing and is powered by means of three-contact connector.

The integrated drive bay is estimated for five drives of 3.5-inch form-factor. One of the bays for 5.25-inch drives is furnished by default with a universal adapter for 2.5/3.5-inch devices.

To continue, Zalman has taken care about the case’s compatibility with manifold system platforms. Thus, the company enlarged the notch for the CPU cooler backplate for it to comply with all contemporary sockets. Road clearance, located over the motherboard tray, for the cable management system equals to 22 mm. A set of cables consists of four frontal panel wires, a socket for the internal USB 3.0 holder, a couple of 3-contact sockets and a single MOLEX of fan controller, HDAudio and USB 2.0 cables.

Fan Mode Switch

As it was mentioned above, the top facet houses a dedicated switch for the adjustment of fan rotational speed. In fact, there are only two available operational modes: High and Low. When enabling High mode, the speed of the rear fan achieves its maximum 1200 RPM, while all other system fans (pre-installed and additional) demonstrate even more striking speed – 1300 RPM. On such conditions, the noise is on the above-average level. When enabling Low mode, the speed index of the rear fan remains the same, while all other fans cut their speed to about 700 RPM. On such conditions, the noise level is truly low.
