Wireless Router Asus RT-AC66U Review

Till recent past routers supporting 802.11n standards have been supposed as the most up-dated and powerful ones. However, nowadays this segment is outliving certain upgrade and a few manufacturers start integrating a new, more advanced standard – 802.11ac. One may wonder why developing one more standard if 802.11n is able to manage current video at high speeds. Still, the design of a more progressive item signifies more promising features. Asus RT-AC66U belongs to a new generation of routers exactly due to the support of 802.11ac.

Design

Asus RT-AC66U is housed in a black dull casing made of plastic. It is equipped with three external antennas which are intended to provide for a perfect sensitivity and high signal level. The manufacturer has taken care of router's comprehensive utilization, enabling both, vertical and horizontal, way of placement; there is also possibility to fix the item on the wall.

One of the characteristics pertained to this model is its considerable weight. The integration of high-performance hardware layout developed into the necessity to employ a voluminous radiator. In this light, vertical router localization is more preferable, since grids of the passive cooling system are located on the base and at contours. The product is furnished with nine blue LEDs that signalize about USB connection, Wi-Fi activity, Internet connection, general status activity, LAN1-4, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels.

The rear part of the casing accommodates several wired ports, activation input, PSU input, a couple of USB 2.0 ports, antenna sockets, clear settings button, and WPS client activation button. The standard delivery set includes the router itself, three external antennas, PSU 18V/1.58A, special stand for vertical placement, gigabit network cable, CD with software, and brief guidelines.

Layout

Router Asus RT-AC66U features BCM4706/BCM53003 processor with 600 MHz working frequencies. RAM volume capacity equals to 256 MB, while flash memory accommodates 128 MB, as compared to the predecessor with 32 MB capacity. In addition, the manufacturer equips its product with a second 2 MB chip that contains some service sections. The work with various signals is realized by means of different controllers: BCM4331 is used for the operation at 2.4 GHZ, while BCM4360 — for the operation at all 5 GHz versions, including 802.11ac. Both controllers are connected to the main processor via PCI Express bus. Moreover, they are able to support 450 Mb/sec mode for 802.11n standard and up to 1300 Mb/sec for the advanced 802.11ac.

USB connection is realized via AU6259 controller which is located in processor. Printed circuit board also contains JTAG and console socket. Gigabit commutator is represented by BCM53125 controller.

Facilities and Settings

Asus RT-AC66U shares similar facilities with its predecessor, though all the options have been improved. Settings web interface features dark tints, integrated assistant, graphics system outline, and some other items. HTTP has been supplemented with HTTPS for more secure utilization. There is a possibility for the customer to allow the access to the settings via WAN, to disable NAT, and to change MAC address. The Internet connection might be enabled by various topical alternatives: PPTP, PPPoE and IPoE. IPTV users are able to choose the port number for the console activation, multi-cast enabling or UDP Proxy server activation. Additionally, Asus offers Jumbo Frames enclosure and disabling of hardware translation accelerator.

Local section allows the customer to select the necessary IP address, activate DHCP server for automatic client configuration. The router supports IPv6 mode through manual or automatic address entitlement. Facilities implemented in settings of wireless interfaces are versatile. Hence, the interface indicates network name, working mode, channel width and its number, access control mode, and password. The router provides for the creation of guest networks (three per each range) where it is feasible to set proper security and automatic disconnection timer.

'Administration' section embraces traditional set of facilities, including firmware upgrade, change of administrator password, management of configurations, activation of Telnet server, etc. This section is intended also at selecting the model's working mode: wireless router, access point or client (bridge).

'Firewall' section promotes for the creation of lists for the filtering according to URLs, key words or web pages, MAC addresses and services. 'Parental Control' option is called to help users in restricting the websites or particular content.
