Motherboard MSI FM2-A85XA-G65 Review

APU A-Series from AMD has already proved itself as a fair correlation of performance and consumer properties. This allows users to create budgetary home systems that can readily cope with all contemporary tasks, video games, simultaneously providing a considerable speed increase. MSI is one of the companies to develop a motherboard on the basis of this platform, ensuring in its FM2-A85XA-G65 rich functional and maximal performance. The developers have managed to design the board with a minimal amount of additional controllers, though expansion facilities are sure to satisfy the majority of potential customers.

Design and Layout

Motherboard MSI FM2-A85XA-G65 belongs to Military Class III line and is developed in ATX form-factor. Similar to other products of this line, this model is differentiated by a voluminous cooling system and a quite powerful VRM node. This board is destined for Socket FM2 logics and is ready to accommodate processors of A-Series and Athlon. It is based on the senior AMD A85X chipset that ensures the support of the majority of known interfaces. The implemented PCB houses four DIMM slots for the integration of 64GB DDR3-1866 MHz, a couple of PCI-e 2.0 x16 slots for the creation of AMD CrossFireX configurations, two PCI and three PCI-e 2.0 x1 slots, and eight SATA 6Gb/sec sockets which are controlled by AMD A85X system logics. The latter supports AHCI mode and promotes for the incorporating of disk drives into RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 arrays.

Expansion facilities are represented by four USB 3.0 and ten USB 2.0 ports. The set of controllers implemented in the motherboard involves Realtek RTL8111E chip responsible for gigabit Ethernet network, 8-channel HD audio codec Realtek ALC892 responsible for the audio subsystem. The rear panel is equipped with a number of interfaces that promote for the maximal realization of expansion facilities: network RJ-45 port, PS/2, four USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports, S/PDIF output, six analog audio sockets, D-Sub, DisplayPort and HDMI video outputs.

The implemented cooling system is designed with the consideration of APU overclocking. Fans are connected by means of five dedicated sockets, three of which are 4-contact and support PWM technology. Power elements of voltage adapter are cooled due to a pair of voluminous heatsinks. The framework employs a heat pipe to provide for the even warming of the board. System logics chip is cooled down by an efficient small-sized heatsink.

MSI uses discrete MOSFETs in electric chains of VRM system. 8-channel voltage converter is monitored by PWM controller IR3567A; six phases create voltage for computing modules, while the other two are responsible for the memory controller and northern bridge. Power supply is ensured by 8-contact EPS12V socket that gives the necessary reliability during overclocking.

The nominal delivery kit of FM2-A85XA-G65 consists of four SATA 6Gb/sec cables, V-Check adapters set, I/O shield for the rear panel, M-Connectors set, DVD with drivers and software, and a detailed user's manual.

UEFI

The firmware of MSI FM2-A85XA-G65 is based on Unified EFI with an original ClickBIOS II interface. Right after its activation, the customer sees the main menu and info panel that displays time&date, CPU temperature, firmware data and operational modes. The main menu allows setting the order of initiation for the charge devices and choosing one of the following working modes: Standard, OC Genie II and ECO mode. The latter mode activates some additional power-saving options, Standard mode provides for a total control over the motherboard parameters, while OC genie II mode permits activating an automatic overclocking activity.

'Settings' section contains all basic chipset and controllers settings. System Status tab unveils info about connected SATA devices; Advanced menu combines a multiplicity of functional settings; Integrated Peripherals subsection is responsible for the work of disk subsystem, while Integrated Graphics tab allows adjusting the work of the integrated graphics adapter. Sub-menu 'Hardware Monitor' takes responsibility for the system monitoring options and fan rotational speed; Boot section is destined for the setup of uploading process; Windows 8 Configuration tab allows the users of this OS to choose the most appropriate facilities.

The firmware offers each customer a wide range of overclocking options available in Overclocking Settings menu. In addition to the standard settings on the monitoring of nominal frequencies, it's possible to tune AMD Turbo Core technology, memory mode and voltage regulation on every node of the motherboard. The board also supports XMP profiles that enable the support of automatic RAM settings.

'ECO' section is accountable for the operation of Active Phase Switching technology; it deactivates the unused VRM phases and increases the board's power-efficiency.
