Solid-Based Deepcool Pangu Case Review

For a good while Deepcool has been known as a manufacturer of cooling solutions only. Nonetheless, the rising competition and the enlarging number of multi-segment companies, which specialize in several markets simultaneously, prompted Deepcool to expand its production line. It was well worth the effort. The lineup of PC cases is nowadays full of offers for customers with diverse tastes. Pangu, one of the latest company’s elaborations, is an evidence of many years’ experience and a touch of epoch’s needs. Its primary attraction is a solid-based chassis; still there are some other peculiarities worth of investigating.

Key Features

Deepcool Pangu case features the following specifications:
— form-factor, dimensions: midi-tower, 477x205x501 mm;
— chassis: steel + ABS plastic, black/white coating versions;
— supported motherboards: ATX, micro-ATX, mini-ITX;
— drive slots: 2x external 5.25-inch, 1x internal 5.25-inch, 6x internal 2.3/2.5-inch;
— expansion slots: 7;
— I/O panel: 2x audio ports (In and Out), 2x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0;
— cooling: 2x 120 mm frontal (pre-installed), 1x 92/120 mm rear (pre-installed), 2x 120 top (optional), 1x 120 mm (optional), 1x 92/120 mm internal (optional);
— shipping contents: user manual, 4x screws for PSU, 10x cable couplings, 13x screws for the motherboard and 2.5-inch drives, 12x long screws for HDD mounting, 9x racks for the motherboard, an adapter from hex-type screwer to crosshead screwdriver, a lock loop.

Design Overview

Pangu’s design might be called practical due to the prevalence of black color, gentle curves, fine-meshed grids, and soft-touch plastic coating. The only prominent peculiarity is bright-blue insertions on joint edges. It should be mentioned that the case is available in white color, as well as with an acrylic window (V2 and SW versions).

The larger part of the frontal panel is covered by a grid. Its top section houses a plug that covers two slots for 5.25-inch bays. The bottom section contains a detachable anti-dust filter that hides a pair of pre-installed fans. This filter consists of three layers: fine-meshed metallic grid, ordinary grid and plastic grid.

I/O panel is located in the top facet; there are two indicators there along with the interface sockets (red – drive activity, blue – power on). A large Power and a small Reset buttons found their place in the right corner. The top facet also contains a dust filter. The rear facet is all about a detachable ventilation grid; it houses one slot for 120/92 mm fan. Both side panels are blind without any striking features but for dedicated handles which facilitate the case’s transportation. Finally, the bottom facet comes with an anti-dust filter.

Layout Overview

Deepcool Pangu is estimated for ATX, micro-ATX and micro-ITX motherboards, 165 mm high CPU coolers, and 300 mm long graphics cards (without drive baskets – 420 mm long). The distance between the top facet to the upper board’s brim is 35 mm; it’s quite enough for two 120 mm fans but might be inadequate for a two-section liquid-cooling heatsink.

The pre-installed rear fan is equipped with a blue backlight. The blades start rotating at 9 V, developing the speed up to 700 RPM and producing up to 38 dB noise. At the maximal 12 V the blades rotate at 900 RPM and produce up to 40 dB noise. The connection with the PSU is realized via 3-contact socket and MOLEX.

To continue, the slot for PSU boasts rubber dampers. The ultimate length of the appropriate power supply unit makes up 180 mm. If the user prefers models with a totally modular design, it’s better to choose the one with not more than 160 mm length.

Both drive baskets are detachable and modular. The middle basket is located in front of expansion slots (from the first to the fifth one). It has a screwless fixture, so might be easily removed. When removed, the space for the graphics cards enlarges to 420 mm. Each basket has three flexible slides intended for 3.5-inch drives; at the same time, 2.5-inch models require bolting up. In order to remove the bottom basket the user needs to unscrew six bolts.

The case features three bays for 5.25-inch drives, one of which (the lower one) is ready to accommodate an additional 92/120 mm fan. The integrated thumbscrew allows rotating and fixing the fan within the measure of 180 degrees vertically against the bay.
