PSU Enermax Platimax 850W Review

Platimax series belongs to the top line of power supply units designed by Enermax. The series includes seven models, ranging from 500W to 1500W power, which are characterized by the operational temperature scope from 0 to 50 degrees and the correspondence to 80Plus Platinum standard. Model Platimax 850W (codename EPM850EWT) is a worthy ambassador of the whole production line, due to its reliable, stable and efficient work.

General Specifications

Enermax Platimax 850W unit is developed with the employment of high-quality Japanese capacitors that ensure stability of operation on any work mode. Its design resembles a lot the one seen in Revolution87+ PSU series, although instead of yellow, Platimax uses gray color in combination with a black one. The unit is housed in a fingerprint- and scratch-proof case with a frosting finish. One of the side panels features a conspicuous Platimax logo that adds supremacy to the model. The frontal panel accommodates On/Off switch and a couple of sockets for a power protection bracket. The rear panel is notable by a set of modular sockets, the contents of which are indicated in a separate table.

This unit is delivered in a spacious cardbox which contains a set of useful components: user's guidelines, Velcro ties, a set of fixing screws, a power protection bracket, an AC power wire, and a separate bag with a kit of modular cables.

Power Distribution and Connectors

All basic parameters of Platimax 850W model might be found on its case. Thus, the manufacturer declares the index of 840W (70A) for the +12VDC rail power. The overall correlation of power on +12VDC rail and the entire power equals to 0.988.

Like many other contemporary PSUs, this model employs the so-called modular system of cable connection with connectors to supply power to the components within the PSU. The list of available cables and connectors is provided below:
— 24-pin Main Power with a single monolithic connector;
— 15-pin SATA with twelve connectors on four wires;
— 4-pin 12V Power without connectors;
— 4-pin Peripheral with eight ergonomic connectors;
— 4-pin Floppy Drive with a single connector;
— 8-pin PCI-E 2.0 VGA Power with six demountable connectors;
— 8-pin PCI-E 1.0 VGA Power without connectors;
— 6-pin SSI Processor with two connectors.

Internal Layout

Internal layout of Platimax 850W is characterized as a highly-elaborated system that promotes for the utmost performance. The integrated PCB houses an AC receptacle, a couple of CM throttles, a couple of X caps and four Y caps. Bridge rectifier is attached to the heatsink, right after which one might find a pair of capacitors, the same number of sense resistors and one more Y cap. APFC system employs three Mosfets designed by Toshiba (TK20J60U). Six IPP015N04N Mosfets generate the voltage on +12V rail, while traditional DC-DC converters – on the minor rails. Each VRM contains three APM2556 Mosfets. In general, the soldering quality of PCB and other components is described as fairly good.

Cooling System

Enermax Platimax 850W is cooled down by an original fan of 140 mm standard (ED142512W-DA). The fan is based on a sliding bearing with a self-lubricating brushing. It involves a magnetic pendant of rotor shaft that completes two basic tasks: unloads the support bearing and positions the rotor shaft. This is called to reduce the bearing wear and elongate the fan's operability.

Testing

Featuring 80Plus Platinum certificate, the general efficiency level of this PSU model surpasses the index of 90% on 300W-850W power range. The maximal recorded index of 93% might be achieved at 500W power loading. At the same time, efficiency index at 50W power equals to 78%. The power, dissipated by the unit at maximal point, is less than 100W.
