PSU Thermaltake Toughpower Grand 700W Review

Toughpower Grand series is one of the foreground PSU lines in the production gamma of Thermaltake. The series is replenishing with ever newer models from time to time, offering more advanced facilities and more efficient power. Model Toughpower Grand TPG-700M is one of the latest power supply units from this manufacturer. Its is characterized by the availability of 80Plus Platinum certificate and the employment of high-quality capacitors that ensure its stability of operation. Upon the whole, TPG-700M might be called a worthy follower of Toughpower series.

Specifications and User Experience

Thermaltake Toughpower Grand 700W is notable by a quite wide temperature condition range which fluctuates within the measures of 0 up to 50 degrees. The power on +12VDC rail is estimated at 696W (58A). The correlation of power on this rail with the total power makes up 0.994; this is a sample index for such type of units. All other basic specifications of the model are indicated on the unit's casing.

This power supply unit is delivered in a spacious cardbox of black-and-white colors. The aggregate of user experiences gives us a clue that TPG-700M will become a perfect match for high-performance platforms with a powerful graphics subsystem. At low power (100W and lower) this PSU is capable to operate in a passive mode on conditions of moderate temperatures within the casing. The model is supposed to become a beneficial acquirement due to its outstanding performance and reliability. In addition, thanks to elegant design (white stylish case), the unit might be freely applied within the PC chassis with a transparent side window.

Cooling System

TPG-700M is furnished with a single 140 mm fan (TT-1425) provided by Yen Sun Technology. The fan is based on a slide bearing and features rather unusual shape of impellers: asymmetric ellipsis. Adjustment of fan rotational speed greatly depends on the current temperature showings. When the unit operates at 400W power, the fan starts rotating in a minute's time with the environment temperature of 23 degrees. If the unit operates at 100W power, the fan even does not start rotating; at 200W — the fan activates only for 2-3 seconds every ten minutes; at 350W – quite the contrary, the fan deactivates transiently each minute.

All basic semiconductor components are housed on voluminous T-shape heatsinks with 4 mm base. These heatsinks partially cover the adjacent elements, including capacitors, transformers, and throttles; that is why, the latter feel lack of cooling power. Independent power adapters of +5VDC and +3VDC rails are located on supplementary plates which do not have additional heat spreaders.

Cable Management

Thermaltake decided to implement the most comprehensive cable management system in its Toughpower Grand 700W model: modular. All power sockets are located within the system block. Modular system implies that some of the cables can be detached if unnecessary, and then attached again if necessary. The length of cables to the sockets is quite optimal; thus, the unit is compatible with any PC chassis with upper or lower PSU localization (mini-tower and midi-tower). It will also suit some full-tower chassis with lower part PSU localization. The general list of sockets and connectors is given below:

1. 24-pin Main Power Connector (monolithic) with a single connector.
2. 15-pin SATA Connector (on two wires) with eight connectors.
3. 8-pin PCI Express 2.0 VGA Power Connector (dismountable) with four connectors.
4. 8-pin SSI Processor Connector (one dismountable) with two connectors.
5. 6-pin PCI Express 1.0 VGA Power Connector.
6. 4-pin 12V Power Connector.
7. 4-pin Floppy Drive Connector (adapter from Peripheral connector) with a single connector.
8. 4-pin Peripheral Connector with six connectors.

Efficiency and Noise

As it was mentioned above, TPG-700M corresponds to 80Plus Platinum standard. This implies that the model demonstrates really prime efficiency index. On the power range from 200W to 700W efficiency achieves the index above 90%; the maximal 92% is recorded at 400W power. This index reduces with the lowering of power: 82% at 50W, 74% at 32W. This PSU model is characterized by an average noise level in a power condition rate from 200W to 500W. Still, at full power of 700W the noise level can reach 40dB that might break an acoustic ergonomics a bit.
