Unusual PC Monitor HP Envy 27 Review

High-end PC monitors segment is abundant in models of different frameworks, designs and facilities. Nevertheless, the majority of manufacturers offer rather alike solutions, leaving demanding consumers dissatisfied. HP is the company known for challenging the rising demands, so the introduction of HP Envy 27 was an ‘expected surprise’ for all interested parties. This monitor distinguishes itself by an unusual design, remarkable specifications, and traditionally high price. It’s time to vindicate those privileges de visu.

Design and Ergonomics

HP Envy 27 catches the attention from the first sight, due to a stylish and elegant design. Despite the usage of glossy panel, the framework boasts the implementation of some other high-quality materials as well: the rear display facet is made of black dull plastic, while the ‘inverse’ L-like stand is made of steel. Cable management system is organized by means of a plastic clamp that is mounted to the central stand and can be moved up/downwards.

Control system found its place in the rear part of the frontal facet; it consists of a thin plastic panel, stretched out along the entire length of the display case. It houses sensor Power key and ambient light sensor. As an add-on ornamental component HP incorporated a close-meshed grid, covering a built-in acoustic system. The rear facet houses video and audio interfaces, which consist of several sockets, in/outputs.

The right side of the display is notable by the availability of a dedicated socket for the connection of headphones. This might be called a real breakthrough in sound production. This model features four turned-up speakers (a pair at each side) that produce pure, clarion sound.

The incorporated stand is not distinguished by rich functionality. It allows only for display tilting within the range of -5 to +5 degrees. Still, this is quite sufficient for a high-end product. Panel alignment is ideal. Metallic mounting system and tilting mechanism leave no doubts in their reliability and durability.

The nominal delivery set of HP Envy 27 contains a power cable, an external PSU, CD with user’s manual and dedicated software, cable management components, D-Sub, cable, DisplayPort cable, HDMI cable, audio cable, and a barrier sheet that covers the panel.

Menu and Settings

Control process is realized thanks to seven sensor keys, located in the bottom part of the clipboard. The leftmost Power key is equipped with white LED; the rightmost Beats Audio On/Off key is accompanied by a special indicator that turns red in ‘On’ mode, turns white on touching the control panel, and doesn’t glow in idle mode. Apart from menu activities and parameters setting, control keys provide for a quick access to automatic settings on analogue connection, for a selection of signal sources, and for audio system management. One more thing, all sensor keys are quite responsive.

The main menu has undergone major renovations, if compared with the previous models from this manufacturer. Its framework has got more light, contrast and sections. Herein, HP assigned brightness and contrast settings to separate sections in order to make their adjustment as easy as ABC.

‘Color’ section features a large number of settings, involving color temperature preset modes, Quick View modes, and color gamut settings. ‘Image Control’ section allows the user to set a scaler operational mode, adjust the sharpness, enable OverDrive overclocking technology, as well as dynamic contrast mode. ‘OSD Control’ section is responsible for OSD settings (its transparency, time to disappearance).

‘Management’ section is considered to be one of the most attractive ones; it involves all parameters that are, this or that way, connected with power consumption, power supply, and other internal engines. All operational data might be found in ‘Information’ section. Factory Reset option allows resetting all settings established by default. The final ‘Source Control’ section permits selecting the necessary video input, defining the source by default, and disabling automatic switch.
