Budgetary Chassis NZXT Tempest 210 Review

Product line of NZXT, an American hardware developer and supplier, is basically targeted at gamers and enthusiasts. Its chassis and power supply units prove to demonstrate highly-efficient characteristics and, in some terms, outstanding performance. Still, the company expands its customer audience by developing products for middle-end and entry-level consumer groups. Its latest chassis model Tempest 210 belongs exactly to the budgetary sector due to the reasonable correlation: quality – price. Being an entry-level product, NZXT Tempest 210 is ready to offer quite satisfactory facilities and performance.

Design

Design of NZXT Tempest 210 chassis can be called classical. This is confirmed by all straight lines and standard framework. Grid-like frontal panel is the only distinguishing feature of the model. The rear panel is analogous to the majority of other classical enclosures. Tempest 210 is delivered only in black version to add universality to the model's utilization. The chassis features 195x450x497 mm dimensions which promote for its installation into any suitable place.

The nominal delivery kit of NZXT Tempest 210 absolutely corresponds to its budgetary class, still offering all necessary for installation and layout components. Hence, the kit contains a detailed user guideline, a set of screws for installation of the motherboard and other devices, a set of hexagonal stands for the motherboard, a set of bolt screws for fan's fixture, a set of screws for PSU fixture, plastic bracing wires, rubber inclusions for water cooling system, and an adapter for the hexahedron.

Integration

Chassis NZXT Tempest 210 is designed in Mid-Tower form factor. The black casing is made of SECC steel but for the plastic detachable clipboard. The right-side panel is totally blind. The grid-like frontal panel contains a removable filter which is located from the inside. The top part of the clipboard accommodates three bays for 5.25 inch drives which are covered by perforated plugs. All control elements also found their places in this part of the panel: startup and reset buttons, two activity indicators (PC and disk subsystem activity), a couple of USB ports (2.0 and 3.0 versions) with blue LED, mini-jack 2.5 mm outputs (support AC'97 and HD Audio).

Bottom-part PSU localization is stipulated by the implemented chassis form factor. This prevents its heating by the other components within the casing. The unit can be installed as with upper fan localization so with a bottom one.

The top panel has got a couple of ventilation grids with dedicated spacing for fans of 140 mm or 120 mm dimensional type. Rear ventilation grid is destined to provide the integrated power supply unit with fresh air. One more ventilation grid serves the airflow means for the 120 mm fan.

Internal Layout

Internal layout of NZXT Tempest 210 resembles the layout developed for all mid-tower enclosures. As it was mentioned above, this model is characterized by bottom-part PSU installation. Right above the unit, there is a space for the motherboard tray fixture; the casing is compatible with ATX and micro-ATX board types. The front part within the casing is alloted for eight 3.5 inch drives. Unfortunately, there is no possibility for the user to apply 2.5 inch drives. The middle part of the casing accommodates seven expansion slots with perforated plugs. Spacing under 5.25 inch bays is alloted for two 120 mm fans destined to cool down the hard drives bay.

The internal layout promotes for the integration of water cooling system. There are dedicated holes in the rear part of the casing to efficiently manage its installation. The integration of hard drives is quite unpretentious and is realized without any screws: HDDs are fixed due to special shut-off valves. Finally, the casing is ready to accept graphics cards of maximal 230 mm in length (with HDD), 330 mm in length (without HDD), and CPU cooler of maximal 160 mm in height.

Cooling System

Chassis NZXT Tempest 210 is delivered with two nominal fans, though the user is given a chance to expand the system up to eight fans. One standard 120 mm blow-off fan is located on the rear plate, the other 140 mm blow-off fan – on the top plate. The manufacturer claimed that 120 mm fan is able to achieve 1200 rpm speed, while 140 mm fan – 1100 rpm speed. Both fans are equipped with three-contact sockets, as well as Molex sockets.

The customer is offered practically limitless facilities for colling system expansion. Thus, it's possible to install two 120 mm fans to the frontal part of the casing into special bays. One more fan (either 120 mm or 140 mm) can be installed at the top plate; the fourth additional 120 mm fan can find its place on the casing's base. The last two 120 mm fans can be fixed on the left-side plate; they will facilitate the colling of a graphics adapter.
