Chassis Corsair Carbide 300R Review

Nowadays one can hardly trace the launch of chassis targeting different audiences. Products for gamers appear with enviable regularity, making thousands of potential buyers thrill from impatience to acquire a new creation. Unfortunately, the attribute 'gaming', defining the chassis, implies higher costs due to the integrated advanced design and technological options. Corsair perfectly understands that not all gamers can afford buying high-cost products and released gaming chassis, Corsair Carbide 300R, for middle-class customer audience. Despite the reduced cost, R300 demonstrates appropriate layout and framework facilities necessary for creation of an efficient gaming system.

Design and Layout

Corsair Carbide 300R goes with totally back casing and a single color version. The casing is made of steel, while the clipboard is made of dull plastic; this panel is fixed to the main framework by six latches with metallic inclusions. Overall design is characterized by strictness and minimalism. The clipboard is ornamented by a few screw caps which are integrated only for decorative means. The chassis is developed in Midi-Tower form-factor with the bottom PSU localization. It is compatible with the motherboards of ATX and smaller standards.

There is enough spacing between the disk bay and ODD sections to allow the installation of lengthy graphics cards (up to 450 mm). Crosscut HDD bay can accommodate four 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch SSD/HDD drives installed by means of plastic sliding. The top part of the clipboard is equipped with three slots for 5.25 inch devices with the output to the frontal panel.

Framework

This model features 474x210x490 mm dimensions and weighs 6.5 kg. The chassis is based on two stands (frontal and rear) furnished with rubber stripes which promote for better shock-absorbing properties. Almost all spacing of the top panel is alloted for ventilation grids. Control elements traditionally found their places on the top panel; this makes the usage of the enclosure more versatile (it can be placed either on the table or on the floor). The set of interfaces would not gladden inveterate gamers, containing merely a couple of USB 3.0 ports, two audio sockets and standard buttons (Power and Reset). The separation distance between USB ports equals to 9 mm; this is quite sufficient for the simultaneous connection of voluminous devices.

Ventilation System

Corsair carbide 300R is delivered with two nominal fans. It can be two 120 mm fans or one 140 mm and one 120 mm. The frontal fan is responsible for the provision of airflow into the graphics cards zone. The second fan is located on the rear panel. Both items are connected to the motherboard with the assistance of 3-contact sockets and do not have any lighting. The manufacturer haven't provided for the integration of any fan controller.

The customer is free to install five fans more of 120/140 mm dimensions type: one fan on the frontal panel near the disk bay, two fans on the top panel and two more – on the left-side panel. All fixing screws can be found in the nominal delivery kit. There are anti-dust removable filters which prevent the power elements from littering. One of the filters is located on the bottom panel in site of PSU installation.

The chassis framework permits installing CPU cooling systems of up to 175 mm in height. In addition, there is always possibility to integrate water cooling system; for this, the manufacturer stipulated three perforations on the back panel.

Chassis Integration

Side plates are fixed due to notches, racks and screws. They are easily detachable and are peculiar for dedicated holding ledges. All cables and loops can be managed under the motherboard tray and tied by particular coupling. There is only one central board stand that helps in its correct installation. Cuts for expansion cards are covered by reusable plugs. The stipulated window in the motherboard tray promotes for unimpeded installation/deinstallation of CPU cooler without the need of removing the board. Optical drives have got non-screw fixture; they are fixed by means of nominal latches on the left side.

HDD and SDD installation presumes their primary placement into the flexible plastic sliding. 3.5 inch drives are fixed by joint pins with rubber softener, while 2.5 inch drives – by screws. The sliding is placed into the chassis from the left side and fixed by plastic latches.

Power supply unit can be installed before or after motherboard placement. Besides, the fan can take either top or bottom position. PSU is fixed to the rear plate with the help of screws. There are special ledges that raise the unit over the chassis bottom.
