CPU Cooler SilverStone NT06-PRO Review

The tendency of assembling small-sized but efficient system units is becoming more apparent among all PC users. Nowadays the extensive occurrence of mini-tower chassis and mini-ITX motherboards requires the employment of corresponding pocket-size CPU coolers. Unfortunately, the latter are practically a rarity, however the demand for small but highly productive coolers is rising on daily basis. SilverStone is one of the few companies that elaborated such kind of products. Its latest NT06-PRO combines all advantages each full-sized model has and is ready to provide a truly efficient cooling.

Design and Framework

SilverStone NT06-PRO is a worthy representative of Nitrogen series. It features a bit unusual design with horizontal orientation. It consists of a voluminous heatsink, counting fifty-two aluminum plates, six C-shape heatpipes, and one fan, mounted underneath the heatsink. Such framework ensures a stable cooling of motherboard nodes and CPU environment. All aluminum plates are straight, although their edge tips have got shaped notches, which enhance the airflow. The incorporated heat pipes pierce the heatsink equally with a pitch of 13 mm; they are soldered to the base. In its turn, the base is covered by an adhesive film. Its bottom is nickel-plated but not mirrored.

A single 120 mm fan features unusual thickness of 20 mm and nine blades. Such choice of thickness can be explained as follows: this is the only size that does not conflict with standard RAM modules. When taking a fan with usual thickness of 25 mm, the user will have to implement low-profile RAM modules. The fan is based on a bush bearing that cuts the noise immensely and employs 4-contact power supply connection. Its rotational activity is regulated by means of PWM technology: the speed might be adjusted within the measures of 1000-2200 RPM.

Delivery Kit

NT06-PRO is delivered in a hackneyed but informative cardbox. Heatsink and fan are packed in a poly bag, while all other fixtures are pre-wrapped in separate packages. The nominal delivery kit consists of a detailed guideline, a universal backplate, a set of mounting components for all CPU sockets, a thermal compound, a fan, two sets of fan brackets, anti-vibration and insulating pads.

General Specifications

CPU cooler NT06-PRO features the following parameters:
— compatibility: Intel LGA 2011, 1366, 1156, 1155, 1150, 775; AMD Socket FM1, FM2, AM2, AM2+, AM3, AM3+;
— heatsink: dimensions – 139x140x82 mm, weight – 410 g, number of plates – 52;
— fan: model – HA1220H12SA-Z, dimensions – 120x120x20 mm, airflow – 57-126 CFM, bearing – bush sliding, mean time between failures – 30.000 hours, nominal voltage – 12V, maximal power consumption – 3.96 W, maximal noise level — 59 dB.

Installation

SilverStone NT06-PRO is distinguished by a universal compatibility with all up-dated processor sockets. Nonetheless, let’s see how the cooler is mounted on the motherboard with Intel LGA 1155 socket. The first step for accomplishment is to pass the fixing studs through the backplate. The latter is then mounted on the motherboard at the reverse side. Plastic stands should be passed through the studs, while mounting frames should be stowed on the stands. This construction might be fixed manually, thanks to dedicated spacers.

Then it’s time to apply thermal compound. After this, the user needs to install the cooler, stow a fixing plank on its base, and tighten the screws. The fan should be equipped with special anti-vibration pads prior to installation. It is mounted by wired brackets underneath the heatsink, with impellers down. On such conditions, the cooler will overlay one expansion slot on the motherboard, since CPU socket is located too close to it.
