Graphics Card HIS Radeon HD 7870 IceQX Turbo Review

Developments in the graphics card sector marvel people every single day. Gamers and enthusiasts are craving for new products to be able to play even the most voluminous games, and to work with any graphic material. There are, of course, budget models which offer good opportunities for standard needs. HIS company, an established supplier of alternative cooling systems and PC hardware, has introduced its new graphics card, codenamed HIS Radeon HD 7870 IceQX Turbo, with the outstanding cooling system and laudable overclocking performance.

Design and Layout

The initial delivery kit of HIS Radeon HD 7870 IceQX Turbo is not distinguished by the abundance of accessories. It contain only the most vital components, necessary for the installation and further utilization: user manual, CD with drivers, CrossFire bridge and adapter, and jackscrew for better transportation.

This graphics card has got bright and individual design that stands in contrast with other products of this manufacturer. The most peculiar feature is the protruded cooling system which perceptibly exceeds the margins of the circuit board. This fact is of vital importance for the customers willing to install it into chassis with cramped spacing. The rear part of the card doesn't have any specific developments or inclusions.

This graphics card is equipped with HDMI, DVI and miniDP video outputs to comply with the contemporary demands to this product. In addition, it accommodates 2 GB of the implemented GDDR5 memory (from Hynix producers).

Cooling System

The first thought that might come to the customer's mind is that the integrated cooling system has got two slots. Nevertheless, it's only a visual approach. In fact, a part of the system, where a fan is localized, towers above the other part; thus, this graphics card will demand three slots for proper enabling. Additional power is supplied to the board by means of two 6-contact power sockets that are located on the edge of the board. The fan is connected to the circuit board with the help of a standard 4-contact socket. The contact point (where the fan goes in contact with the GPU) is made of copper. GPU power subsystem employs five phases. The whole framework is fixed due to four screws.

Overclocking

HIS Radeon HD 7870 IceQX Turbo is developed under 28 nm technological process and is based on Pitcairn XT core. This graphics card model features 256 bit video memory bus.

It should be mentioned that the developers have taken care of HIS Radeon HD 7870 IceQX Turbo overclocking facilities and increased the clock frequency a bit (as compared with the reference HD 7870 model). The overclocking itself has been realized by means of MSI Afterburner applet. Hence, GPU is able to operate at 1100 MHz as compared with 1000 MHz in the reference model; video memory operates at 1200 MHz. The overclocking has been realized without the voltage increase. On such conditions, GPU proved to show stability of operation at 1175 MHz and video memory reached 1450 MHz. Such performance is more than reassuring and is probably the major attraction for the customers.

Power Consumption and Testing Results

This graphics card proves to show rather satisfactory power-saving results. Thus, the system consumes up to 155W in Rest mode, while in full loading mode it consumes 285W. The difference between the two showings equals to 130W.

All tests have been conducted in two resolution formats: 1920x1080 and 2560x1440. Overclocking process seems to enlarge the card's performance; it should be mentioned that this model showed better results than its reference counterpart thanks to the increased nominal frequencies. Such results serve a good sign for gamers as it is able to pull up even emerging up-to-date games.
