Motherboard Asus P8Z77-V Premium Review

Asus boasts the inventory of up to twenty motherboards developed on Intel Z77 chipset. Full-, medium- and small-sized boards gladden the customers by an outstanding functional and optimal layout. Still, the company decided not to stop at what has been already accomplished and introduced a high-end motherboard codenamed Asus P8Z77-V Premium. The major peculiarities of this board are the integrated Thunderbolt bridge, reliable digital CPU power supply subsystem, and a lot more alluring facilities. The product is targeted at the high-end customer sector and Asus hopes to get considerable revenues from its sales.

General Peculiarities

First of all, it should be stated that P8Z77-V Premium design and color gamut continue all traditional standards of Asus motherboards. This model is developed in ATX form-factor and employs dull black textolite in combination with blue, white and black painted sockets. CPU socket is located in a common place; it supports all up-dated Intel CPUs for LGA1155 socket. The board accommodates four DDR3 slots of 32GB capacity that demonstrate the frequency of up to 2800 MHz. Support of XMP profiles allows for the startup of memory modules at 2133 MHz. There is also MemOK button that solves the issues with the system startup on installation of non-standard memory slots.

The motherboard employs six out of seven available expansion slots. Four of them are taken by PCI Express X16 3.0 sockets, while the other two are taken by PCI Express x1 slots of chipset controller. Due to the implementation of a dedicated PLX PEX8747 switch, the model is able to support various graphics cards configurations (CrossFireX, SLI). It's possible to install up to four adapters with two-slot cooling systems. Moreover, P8Z77-V Premium supports LucidLogix Virtu MVP technologies.

Similar to other products of this series, P8Z77-V Premium features BIOS with USB BIOS Flashback option which does not require CPU or RAM. The process of system download is controlled by LED lights located at the key elements. Traditionally, the board houses Startup, Reset and Clear CMOS buttons that found their places on the bottom panel; EPU and TPU switches (destined to control power consumption and overclocking) are located right to the buttons. Internal sockets are represented by only two components: a single USB 3.0 for two ports and a single SATA 3Gb/sec.

The nominal delivery kit of Asus P8Z77-V Premium consists as of standard backplate, user's manual, CD with drivers and software, SATA cables (four cables 6GB/sec and two 3Gb/sec), so of additional specific components: wireless controller with two antennas Wi-Fi+Bluetooth, Q-Connect package, flexible SLI bridge for two graphics adapters, hard SLI bridges for 3-4 adapters, and USB 3.0 block for 3.5-inch sector.

Power Supply and Cooling Systems

High-end motherboards, like Asus P8Z77-V Premium, feature standard power supply sockets configuration (24+8) and employ digital Digi+ controllers. Power phase scheme looks the following way: 16 phases go to processor, 4 – to graphics core, and 2 – to RAM. Upon the whole, such power supply template is called Dual Intelligent Processor 3.

Cooling system consists of four heatsinks, one of which houses a heat pipe connecting it with an additional cooling element. The other heatsink is housed on a chipset and is equipped with a blue LED. Premium motherboard supports Fan Xpert 2 technology for the intellectual fan control activity. All fans are connected to the six 4-contact sockets (2 for CPU and 4 for chassis). Monitoring facilities allow the user to trace the showings taken by a dedicated thermal sensor and check the voltage on four lines.

BIOS

BIOS Setup is notable by the support of a mouse and translation of graphics interface into several languages. 'EZ Mode' version reflects the information about the current configuration and provides for the switch of necessary working mode (normal, saving, optimal). 'Advanced Mode' version usually consists of a few settings groups: Main – date, time, access passwords; Boot – system download; Monitor – system checkout, setup of fan monitoring options; Ai Tweaker – setup of frequencies, voltages, timings, power supply facilities; Advanced – setup of peripheral controllers, CPU, graphics core and chipset.

Functionality

With the purpose to create a high-performance system, Asus equipped its motherboard with the following functional facilities:
— a single Thunderbolt port;
— Bluetooth and Wi-Fi controllers based on Broadcom BCM20702 and BCM43228 chips correspondingly;
— gigabit network controller on MAC and Intel 82579V basis, gigabit network controller on Intel 82583V basis;
— six USB 3.0 ports, six USB 2.0 ports;
— six internal SATA 6Gb/sec ports, three internal SATA 3Gb/sec ports for chipsets, a single internal mSATA 3Gb/sec port for chipset, two eSATA 6Gb/sec ports;
— integrated sound of 7.1 format on HDA Realtek ALC898 codec with an additional S/PDIF-Out socket.
