Overview of the ASRock Fatality Z270 Gaming K6 Motherboard

Recently, there has been released the announcement of the updated platform Intel LGA 1151 – to replace the processors Skylake, the model Kaby Lake has been offered to the user, and it marked the arrival of the next-generation of Intel products. Of course, this event coincided with the release of new chipsets, and then almost all manufacturers have presented motherboards on the new chipset. So, let’s have a quick glance at one of them – ASRock Fatality Z270 Gaming K6 motherboard.

Packaging and Equipment

The box is large, and therefore it is provided with a plastic handle for easy carrying on the top. At its bottom, there is a group of icons representing the support of various technological solutions. It is a special fun to see here the logos of the Intel “friends”, such as AMD and Nvidia. Three of these logos put together may cause cognitive dissonance with anyone even remotely familiar with the PC world.

Let us now look at the back side of the packaging. From above, we can again see the name of the motherboard and its tiny picture, and the two arrays of inserts describing the technical solutions are presented below.

Inside the box, the motherboard is not only packed in a semi-transparent antistatic bag, but also attached to the tray of foamed polyethylene. The following information carriers are offered by the manufacturer:

• Quick installation guide;
• Software setup guide (program management and utilities);
• Card with the company logo;
• DVD disk with drivers and software for different operating systems;
• The sticker for the PC case with the ASRock logo.
And these are the accessories supplied:

• 4 cables SATA 6 Gb/s;
• 1 hard Nvidia SLI bridge;
• 3 screws (two for M.2 drives, one for the wireless adapter (not included));
• 1 plug for the rear panel.

At the first glance, the set is quite modest, but now no manufacturer offers more, so it is not surprising.

Design and Features of the Board

ASRock Fatality Z270 Gaming K6 is a motherboard of full-size ATX format. The dimensions are classic: 305x244 mm. The red and black color scheme is familiar, so is the plastic panel on the left side. The steel-framed PCI-e x16 slots are quite attractive, but such innovation is also of no surprise, as they have been already met in the previous generation of ASRock motherboards.

All the labels on the PCB are made with pale gray. It looks nice, but when you want to read something and here comes the problem. The plastic casing at the right makes the novelty more attractive and provides additional rigidity as well. This can be very useful, because the motherboard bends and it is necessary to take care.

The power to the motherboard is supplied through the primary and additional connectors ATX following the 24+8 scheme.

Four black slots are intended for the type DDR4 memory modules. The experienced users will quickly realize which one to use first, but beginners will surely be in difficulty.
CPU power is performed by a twelve-phase scheme with each phase having a pair of transistors SinoPower SM4336 and SM4337, as well as one super-ferrite inductor.

The main PWM controller is represented here by the Intersil ISL95824 chip, which provides the 4+2 phases. The capacitors are the solid capsule ones, wired closest to the socket.

In the center of the board there is the controller of the clock frequency IDT 6v41642BNLG, which is a part of the ASRock Hyper BCLK Engine II technology.

In the field of the audio codec a translucent plastic window with the inscription Creative Sound Blaster Cinema 3 is provided. The other part of the casing has a group of RGB LEDs. A cable connecting them to a special socket on the board can be seen here.

The radiators are two and both of them are made of aluminum alloy and painted red. Furthermore, they are joined together with a heat pipe of 6 mm in diameter, which passes through special grooves in the radiators. The upper radiator has the inscription with the chipset name. Though the ribbing is weak, but even when the system is in acceleration they stay warm, but not hot.

Another radiator removes heat from the chipset and is also made of aluminum alloy, but this time painted black. It has a red inlay with the labels ASRock and Fatality atop.

Fixing is made by means of two spring-loaded bolts from the back side. A skew protection is provided by two special cushions of a soft material, but they are glued to the board itself. Here another array of RGB LEDs on the radiators’ perimeter can be seen.

The following interfaces are located on the back panel:

• 1 USB 3.1 Type-A slot;
• 1 USB 3.1 Type-C slot;
• 4 USB 3.0 sockets;
• 1 HDMI video output;
• 1 DVI-D video output;
• 1 D-Sub video output;
• 1 PS/2 socket to connect a mouse or a keyboard;
• 2 Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 sockets;
• 5 audio connectors of MiniJack type;
• 1 S/PDIF Out optical socket.

Conclusion

So, let’s summarize: ASRock Fatality Z270 Gaming K6 is an excellent universal board with optimal functionality and support for all the modern interfaces. The following are among its advantages: an interesting design, the wonderfully realized RGB LED backlight function, and a good, but not perfect workmanship.

The only item to be complained of is a thin PCB, but it is critical only if it is frequently dismantled. And if you put the system together for a long time, this nuance can be forgotten, moreover, a decorative plastic panel which gives extra rigidity makes the situation much better. There are no other problems with the board or with its operation.
