Platinum PSU Huntkey FX500SE Review

Nowadays more and more PSU manufacturers tend towards a better acoustic ergonomics of their products. Sure thing this is linked with the desire of customers to have high-performance but quiet systems. There is small wonder that traditional power supplies are rather noisy, due to air fans, so the manufacturers invented a sophisticated solution: hybrid cooling. It presupposes two working modes: active — with fans on and passive — with fans off. Huntkey is one of the companies that successfully implemented this invention into proprietary devices. Its FX500SE is a good example of efficiency combined with quiet operation. Plus, it provides users with appropriate connectivity facilities.

General Specifications

Huntkey FX500SE features a typical for all middle-end products design, without any ingenuity claim. The unit is housed in a steel case of 150x86x140 mm dimensions with matte black coating. All cables are masked under a nylon sheath, adding more solidity to the model. Traditionally, all basic specifications can be found on the case itself.

Therefore, +12VDC bus is estimated for 504 W power (42A); such index exceeds the maximal PSU power. The correlation of efficiency on +12VDC bus with the total efficiency equals to 1.0 – an ultimate, thus a perfect result. Such outstanding showings resulted in the awarding of 80Plus Platinum certificate.

Cabling

The model belongs to a non-modular army of PSUs. This means that all cables are strictly fixed to the case and have a colored nylon sheath. Moreover, all connectors have a colored indication too. The FX500SE is furnished with the following set of cables:

The number of connectors is appropriate for a middle-end solution, though their arrangement is ineffectual. The length of cables to the CPU power socket makes up 55 cm; this is just enough for practically any case type with the top PSU localization and for the majority of midi-tower cases with bottom PSU localization.

Layout and Cooling

All internal components of this unit have undergone thorough selection and testing. The unit employs home-made boards, high-quality Japanese capacitors with an ultimate operational temperature of 105 C, and classical capacitors with 85 C thermal threshold. Practically all internal components are void of passive cooling; aluminum heatsinks are fixed to low-voltage section components only. Thermal contact between the heatsink and the keys is created by means of a thermal paper.

Yate Loon D12SL-12m fan is the main cooling tool. It is based on a slide bearing and features 1650 RPM rotational speed (12V power). Key semiconductor elements are installed on three small-sized heatsinks; input diode set might also boast a proprietary heatspreader. All independent power converters of +3.3VDC and +5VDC channels are allocated on affiliate plates and do not have supplementary heatspreaders.

Testing Results

Huntkey FX500SE demonstrates some remarkable efficiency showings: 0.92 within the ranges of 200-400 W power, whereas the ultimate efficiency index approaches 0.926 at 300 W power. Testing results also prove that this power supply unit is capable to operate in passive mode for quite a long time at 200 W power. However, in the course of time, all surrounding components become hot, so passive cooling transforms into active one.

Finally, in keeping with the hardware base, efficiency and noise level, this PSU is the best choice for the systems with one middle-end graphics adapter of gaming type. Inveterate gamers wouldn’t probably find it a catch, due to a noisy fan startup.
