PSU Gigabyte GreenMax Plus 550W Review

Gigabyte, being one of the major players in the motherboards and graphics markets, quite rarely replenishes its production line with PC chassis and power supply units. Rarely, but right on target! Its GreenMax Plus PSU series is an evidence of the company’s versatile maturity. The series includes three models of 450W, 550W and 650W power. Let’s see what Gigabyte has to offer to all ‘high-fed’ by multiple products customers by the example of GreenMax Plus 550W (codename: GZ-EMS55A-C1) model.

General Features

The GreenMax Plus 550W is delivered in a handheld cardbox with a convenient holder. The unit itself is housed in a typical case with a black semi-gloss coating and a large ventilation grid. All basic specifications are marked on its side facet. The manufacturers claim the power of 504W (42A) for the +12VDC bus. Thereat, the correlation of power on the bus with the total power reaches the index of 0.916, which is considered to be an average benchmark for such type of products.

The unit employs a dedicated architecture with individual stabilizers for +3.3VDC, +5VDC and +12VDC channels. Such design ensures low deviation even on asymmetric loading. The layout accommodates predominantly Taiwanese capacitors of Samxon production, however in the high voltage section one can find Japanese capacitors by Rubycon.

The model is a universal solution practically for any type of PC chassis with top PSU localization. It might also be incorporated into midi-tower cases with bottom PSU localization, though their height should not exceed 45 cm. For higher cases, the length of nominal cables will be insufficient.

Connectors

First and foremost, the number of connectors and their localization on harness provides for the connection of any conceivable set of components. The length of wires is typical for a budget-oriented model; although, there are some exceptions. For instance, the length of the wire to the CPU power socket equals not 50 cm but 55 cm. Cooling

To continue, the GreenMax Plus 550W is equipped with Hong Sheng A1225L12S fan, based on a sliding bearing. Its maximal rotation speed achieves 1800 RPM. All semiconductor components are installed on two semi-sized heatsinks with the base thickness of about 4 mm. It should be noted that sliding bearing is not ideal for the work on heightened temperature conditions, though it is much cheaper than products on ball bearing.

Noise level leaves much to be desired. Thereby, on 50W loading, the noise stays on its minimal low; on 200W loading, it is above average, while on 350W, it reaches the limit of a convenient acoustic level, rising up to 40 dB. On further increase of the loading, the noise might rise to 46 dB at 0.35 m distance from the chassis in which it’s installed.

Efficiency

Testing results show that this PSU model is able to achieve 84% efficiency within the power ranges of 200W-500W. Efficiency index at 50W power makes up 74%, at 36W – 68%. This is an average performance for such type of products; so, the customers will be pleased with its operation on the majority of standard operations and workloads.
