Review of Network Drive IconBIT I-Stor IS308

Production of a new model is positioned as a replacement for modern routers with features of sharing USB-carriers. IS308 — the budget class — single-disk storage is a good device for visiting friends for movies, or for backup. In general, it is used for tasks which are not mission-critical of data loss. The speed and functionality are secondary, the main thing — the price and design. At a price of 90 $, IconBIT IS308 offers the buyer an autonomous Torrent-downloader, a network drive, support for protocols Samba and FTP, gigabit network interface and USB 3.0 port.

The device has stylish black aluminium hull and comes with a stand for vertical installation. IconBIT iS308 looks more like a normal external hard drive rather than the NAS. And if for someone Synology design seems too plastic, and QNAP — too angular, the iconBIT iS308 looks modern, simple and stylish.

The next thing that catches an eye — is the lack of a fan. Finally, there is a NAS with passive cooling. Hard drives have adjusted to consume very little power, and the circuitry in the iconBIT iS308 is a small board with a single processor Codetek JCS358 with frequency of 300 MHz and a memory chip production ESMT 32MB. The processor does not even have a radiator, and it won’t heat up the hard drive. HDD has to be chosen with a minimum number of plates to reduce vibration, because the drive is mounted directly to the chassis without the use of vibration-absorbing pads.

On the hull there are several iconBIT iS308 indicators: power, network connection, data transfer and disk occupancy. On the reverse side of the hull there is unusual for the NAS — USB 3.0 Host port, «Power» and «Format» buttons.

USB 3.0 Host port serves as a connector of iconBIT iS308 to your computer and is used as a regular external hard. This is a very unusual feature — the possibility of using a single interface and access to networks, and to connect to the computer through which you can use the NAS to work with non-networked devices, such as common media players, printers, etc. IS308 has no USB ports for connecting flash drives, a printer or another hard drive.

The manufacturer gave the IS308 only basic functions; in general, it is enough for the average user. Among these functions are:
— Protocol Server Samba;
— Server WebDAV, work with folders on the NAS-e as a local, even over the Internet;
— FTP-server, a universal solution for a variety of backup software;
— Media Server, including support for iTunes, which will play the media content on game consoles, and some special media players.

As the test shows, the speed of USB 3.0 is higher than the speed of the network, so that to copy large amounts of info, this interface is much better than the network.

The cost of the device without hard drive is about $ 90. About as much worth a good router with Torrent-rocking, so worth a good hard drive.

IconBIT iS308 is a transitional model that will allow experimenting with networked storage, in any case it can be used as USB 3.0 drive. A user can entrust it with 24 hours download of movies from the Internet, allow it to be file-storage or store for the backups. The lack of fan will allow it to work in 24/7 mode, no matter it is used at home or at the workplace. There are only one disadvantage — a small number of functions.
