SilverStone SST-RL01 Review: Budget Solution

At first sight, a new chassis from SilverStone speaks about the belonging to high-end segment. Its expressive design and multiple facilities are a rather persuasive evidence for those customers who would like to get a qualitative product. Still, SilverStone SST-RL01 is distinguished by a moderate price, lack of some 'high-end' attributes, and quite modest delivery pack. This gives evidences that the model belongs to budgetary solutions. Despite this fact, SST-RL01 might satisfy all needs of not versed audience.

Integration

Chassis SilverStone SST-RL01 is developed in midi-tower form factor with bottom PSU localization. The airflow is efficiently managed through the top panel of the casing, while both side panels are void of any ventilation grids. One striking peculiarity is that the manufacturer hasn't stipulated the availability of fan on the rear board, though this is a loyal attribute of the majority casings. The clipboard consists of a dull bulging frame, black metallic stripes, static HDD section for the integration of 3.5-inch drives, optional SSD/HDD bay for 2.5-inch devices, four slots for 5-inch drives, and lower part plug.

The casing is estimated for the installation of ATX and smaller motherboards. The maximal length of acceptable graphics adapters is 273 mm, including additional socket for power supply. The nominal delivery set is not distinguished by abundance of accessories; it embraces fixing components, an adapter for the installation of 3.5-inch drives into 5-inch slot, a couple of buckles, a detachable filter for top panel, and multi-language user guidelines.

Framework

SilverStone SST-RL01 features 192x447x485 mm dimensions and goes with solid steel casing. The clipboard is fixed with the help of three latches with metallic inclusions. The middle part of the board is ornamented with a brand hexagonal company's logo; this logo is also a Power button which is surrounded by activity indicators at both sides. Reset button is located in the upper part of the board where a couple of USB 3.0 ports and audio slots found their places. The lower part of frontal panel is covered by a metallic ventilation grid.

Side panels are not flat but a bit salient: the ledge on the right-side panel provides for efficient cable management, while the ledge on the left-side panel adds more spacing for the integration of a solid cooling system. The casing stands on plastic props.

Ventilation System

This chassis model presupposes the installation of five fans, though the nominal delivery is equipped with merely one 120 mm fan on the frontal panel. It blows-in the airflow towards HDD section. There are no special controllers which regulate the work of all fans. The nominal fan is connected to the motherboard by means of a traditional 3-contact socket which also supplies power to the indicators. Since the rear panel is void of any fan, the user is able to install either 120 mm or 180 mm item here. The top panel might accommodate two fans as well: either of 120 mm or of 140 mm dimensional type. Finally, the fifth fan can be integrated to the central part of the bottom panel.

It should be underlined that chassis SST-RL01 is equipped with three filters: the first non-detachable foam-rubber filter is located on the clipboard, while the second, removable plastic filter is located on the lower surface of the casing (it covers PSU installation bay). The third filter found its place on the top panel. It is fixed by thirteen magnets, and can be applied as from the outside so from the inside.

Motherboard and PSU Installation

Motherboard installation does not arouse any complications. It is fixed by means of hexagonal stands; port holes are free but for expansion cards slots which should be manually dislodged. The motherboard tray features a large perforation in CPU environment; such spacing allows the customer to install or deinstall some types of coolers without the need to remove the board.

Power supply unit might be installed as before so after motherboard integration. Its bottom-like localization won't be an impediment for even the most voluminous CPU heatsink. Fixing holes promote for dual-scheme PSU fixture: with the upper fan location and with lower fan location.
