SSD Adata SX900 256 GB Review

The development of solid-state drives was intended to replace traditional HDDs and provide for faster speeds and better performance. Due to such outstanding parameters, SSDs were inaccessible for average customers, but violent growth of this market resulted in gradual decrease in prices. Nowadays 1GB costs less than $1(even with an advanced SATA 6Gb/sec interface), giving all audiences a chance to acquire high-end products for a reasonable price. Not all manufacturers manage to amaze users with their drives, but Adata, a Taiwanese PC hardware giant, always copes with this task. Its latest SSD model, SX900 256 GB, distinguishes itself from all rival products in terms of reliability, durability and performance.

Design and Integration

SSD series Adata SX900 is predestined to be installed in high-performance desktop and laptop systems, and will make benefit to all customers looking for an unbelievable efficiency of data storage subsystem. Model SX900 256 GB features 100x69x9.5 mm dimensions and is designed in 2.5-inch form-factor with SATA 6Gb/sec interface. The upper lid is made of plastic and contains a brand sticker with all essential info about the model. The lower lid is made of light metal alloy that dramatically reduces the overall weight of the drive; it houses a warranty seal and an activation key to Acronis True Image HD program.

Internal integration is designed with the observance of all modern standards. This SSD is based on a high-end SandForce SF-2281 controller and MLC NAND flash-memory (ONFI 2.2 interface). Each of eight controller channels is connected to four modules which promote for quadruple alteration. SandForce controller supports TRIM instruction, hardware encoding with ASE-128, and various RAID configurations.

The implemented PCB accommodates 16 micro chips (16 GB each) developed under 25 nm technological process by Intel and Micron. The summary capacity of memory chips equals to 256 GB, and unlike other products, this capacity is totally available for consumer data storage. Adata assures that such facility became possible thanks to firmware optimization and tough selection of MLC NAND memory chips.

The nominal delivery kit of SX900 256 GB differs immensely from all other drives designed by Adata. This allows each potential customer to quickly identify the drive out of dozens competing products. The cardbox is rather compact and differentiates itself by a transparent window on the frontal part. The box contains a set of fixing screws, warranty, dedicated chassis for the installation into 3.5-inch bay, licensed Acronis True Image HD software, and user's manual.

Performance

Adata guarantees foolproof operation of its SX900 256 GB drive during 36 months in succession; at the same time, MTBF index achieves one million hours. Due to the absence of movable parts in the framework, the drive features vibration-proof properties and are able to keep the operability in temperature ranges from 0 to 70 degrees. This SSD consumes not more than 0.5W in standby mode and 1.2W on conditions of maximal loading. The nominal speed characteristics are estimated as:
— consecutive Read speed: 550 Mb/sec;
— consecutive Write speed: 530 Mb/sec;
— random Read speed: no data;
— random Write speed: 90000 IOPS.
