Wireless Storage Device Seagate GoFlex Satellite Review

Till recent times external storage devices have been a gimmick for the vast majority of PC and mobile users. Today those unpretentious appliances can be found in any IT store. Their basic privileges are seen in compact dimensions and easy transportability, when it goes about laptops, mobile devices and pads. Indeed, all those devices are simply unable to accommodate built-in storages, that is why they need an efficient 'external' solution. Moreover, one might revel in the facilities provided by wireless external storages which do not require any cables or additional accessories. Seagate GoFlex Satellite is a bright example of evolution in this sphere.

Integration

Seagate GoFlex Satellite features classical for such devices design: a small casing with USM socket that serves a means of clog for power supply contacts and SATA data transfer. The casing itself has got a glossy coverage. The model is based on regular external HDDs of GoFlex series manufactured by Seagate. One of the most advantageous peculiarities is the possibility to connect the device directly to the USM docks of laptops or mobile devices. Still, the nominal connection method is SATA-USB 3.0 adapter delivered along with the storage device. When this adapter is disabled, USM socket is covered by a plastic plug. Therefore, GoFlex Satellite resembles other external storages with 2.5-inch hard drive, though it also accommodates a built-in battery and a set of electronics.

One more distinctive feature of external storage device from Seagate is the availability of a separate socket for power supply adapter. Its predestination is doubtful, since the model can be powered from a standard USB adapter or from a car lighter with USB socket. The integrated battery is equipped with universal pins of American, European and English standard to be applied in any corner of the world.

Framework and Specifications

The main component of this wireless external storage device is Seagate ST9500325ASG hard drive (Momentus 5400.6 series) of 2.5-inch form-factor. The hard drive is furnished with a free-fall sensor. This sensor lends a helping hand in situations when the drive is in free fall; thus, with the purpose to protect its surface from malfunctions and scratches, the sensor will withdraw the actuator from magnetic plates. The hard drive is also characterized by low power consumption and average performance. The integrated battery (2800 mA, 10.36W, 3.7V) is located under the drive. More detailed specifications of GoFlex Satellite are listed below:
— volume capacity: 500GB;
— employed interface: SATA 3 Gb/sec;
— spindle speed: 5400 rpm;
— data density: 250GB/plate (overall 2 plates);
— sector size: 512 byte;
— power consumption: 0.81W in standby mode, 1.54W in operational mode.

Web-server and router functions are realized via an integrated SoC system (AM37XX series) that is notable by the absence of graphics accelerator. Cortex A8 is the main processor operating at 1GHz frequency and developed under 45 nm technological process. Other components found on the circuit board are SoC power controller, WLAN module with support of 802.11 b/g/n (2.4 GHz frequency), and 128 MB of DDR memory.

Operation

It should be noted that the implemented hard drive has got NTFS format and contains brand software. Windows users are able to instantly start filling the drive with the data, while Mac OS users will have to install a dedicated driver with NTFS function. Firmware update is realized by means of copying the necessary file to the disk root directory and further reloading of the storage. Web-interface consists of rather suitable bookmarks for media library and other file types. The storage also goes with FreeAgent GoFlex program that serves a membrane for Memeo family (Memeo Instant Backup, Memeo Sync, Memeo Send); it is used for data backup and synchronization processes.

The manufacturer claims that the battery is estimated at 25 hours work in standby mode and 7 hours in operational mode. The stipulated bandwidth is sufficient to play video in 1080 pixel format, compressed by H.264 codec. Upon the whole, the storage might translate the current to eight devices simultaneously, though there can be some issues concerning the frame rate stability.
