Lifting the Veil from USB Type-C Bus

Since the launch in 1995, Universal Serial Bus (USB) has proved itself as the most successful ever computing interface. Nowadays tens of billions of electronic devices are connected together due to it. It goes without saying that this bus has outlived a few modifications, each distinguished by higher speed and reliability. Thus, today the community is able to revel in a completely new modification – USB Type-C – that forecasts a lot privileges of connectivity process. Let’s see what users will get with a new bus.

Layout and Connectivity

In physical terms, Type-C is a bit larger than USB 2.0 Micro-B but a bit tinier than binary USB 3.0 Micro-B, featuring 8.34x2.56 mm. Such dimensions enable its connection to the devices of any type, including the thinnest smartphones/tablets. The oval-shaped socket houses 24 contact outputs (to compare: USB 3.0 sockets feature only 9 outputs).

The most outstanding physical peculiarity of Type-C is a symmetric connector that …

SilverStone Launches 4-Port ECU01 PCI Expansion Card

Taking into account an ever increasing demand for USB 3.0 interfaces, SilverStone has elaborated a dedicated PCI expansion card, entitled ECU01. The card is designed in a low-profile form-factor with the support for PCI Express 2.0 x2 bus. It features a pair of 19-contact USB 3.0 sockets, each of which offers two USB 3.0 ports.

In keeping with the manufacturer, this comprehensive model is called to satisfy the need for high-speed interfaces, absent with old-fashioned systems. For sure, the amount of connectivity ports integrated within the motherboards (usually of entry-level/budgetary standard) is not always enough for enthusiasts and gamers. Hence, there can appear an acute need for additional expansion cards, like ECU01.

SilverStone ECU01 is based on Etron EJ198 controller, featuring an additional SATA interface that is responsible for an efficient power supply. Moreover, the model supports UASP protocol that accelerates data transfer speed. If the current OS does not …

Gigabyte Unleashes a Pair of Brix Mini-PCs for Skylake Platform

Gigabyte keeps on expanding the segment of mini-PCs with its proper Brix solutions. This time the lineup has been replenished with two models: Brix GB-BSCEA-3955 & Brix GB-BSCEHA-3955. The two differ from each other by the height of the case. The first new-comer features 119.4x112.6x34.4 mm dimensions, whereas its companion boasts 119.4x112.6x46.8 mm dimensions. The latter allows for the installation of an additional 2.5-inch drive of 7.0 or 9.5 mm height. Both models are targeting Intel Skylake platforms.

The other characteristics of these mini-PCs are identical. They are based on two-core Intel Celeron 3955U CPUs (14 nm) which operate at 2.0 GHz frequency. Processors cooperate closely with Intel HD Graphics 510 that runs at 300-900 MHz clock frequency. The motherboard PCB (110x105 mm) houses a couple of SO-DIMM slots for DDR4-2133 MHz RAM (up to 32 GB).

Both Brix solutions offer one slot for the installation of M.2 2280 drive and a sole M.2 expansion slot which is …
