PC Chassis Gigabyte Sumo Alfa Review

The multeity of PC chassis in the market might create a real confusion for entry-level consumers. Small-sized and big-sized, rectangular and square, black and white models are developed with the only purpose: to satisfy the demands of each particular customer group. Gigabyte, a hardware giant, knows how to attract potential clients to its new products. Sumo series of chassis is primarily targeting gamers due to a futuristic design and bright LED lighting. However, the latest model of this series, codenamed Sumo Alfa, is destined for a wider audience than gamers only and will perfectly suit PC enthusiasts, as well as, users with more modest requirements.

Integration

Chassis Gigabyte Sumo Alfa is designed in midi-tower form-factor with lower PSU localization. It is delivered in a mere black color of casing, supplemented by a few steel-like inlets on the frontal panel. The latter is given an unusual shape to justify the slogan 'The Future Begins': glossy surface with metallic grids and four ornamental components in the lower part of the panel with blue LED.

The chassis stipulates the installation of five 5.25-inch drives, four of which have got an output to the frontal panel. The transverse inner bay accommodates four slots for the integration of 3.5-inch drives, and one more slot for a single 2.5-inch SSD/HDD. Sumo Alfa is compatible with the motherboards of up to ATX format and with graphics adapters with up to 300 mm in length.

The nominal delivery set of Gigabyte Sumo Alfa consists of user's manual, a set of fixing elements (including six one-off couplings), a motherboard speaker, nine motherboard stands, rubber plugs, and a kit of slides for the installation of hard drives.

Framework

Sumo Alfa features 442x200x515 mm dimensions. The casing is made of steel, except for some plastic inclusions. The clipboard is notable by a peculiar framework with metallic grids in its top part and ornamental components in lower part. Power button found its place in the central section; it's lighted by blue LED. Reset button and all external outputs (a couple of audio and the same number of USB 3.0 ports) are located on the top plate on a general plank. Right-side panel is totally blind, while left-side panel contains a large window covered by a metallic grid. The surface of the rear panel is practically all perforated.

Cooling System

This chassis is delivered with two pre-installed 120 mm fans (without LEDs). Their localization is conditioned by the utmost cooling necessities: the first frontal fan blows the airflow into HDD bay, while the second rear fan cools down CPU zone. Gigabyte does not stipulate any nominal controllers but offers quite uncommon connection method. Each fan contains 4 cm cable with 3-contact socket; the cables are combined by an additional longer cable with similar socket which is connected directly to the motherboard. Both fans can be substituted by 140 mm frontal and 92 mm rear fan. Besides, this cooling kit might be extended by a single bottom fan and two 120mm/140mm fans on the top panel.

In addition, following the customers' needs, Gigabyte alloted three holes with metallic plugs (which can be substituted by rubbered plugs) on the back plate for the integration of a liquid cooling system.

Assembling

Side panels are mounted by means of notches and rakes, and fixed with the help of thumbscrews. The nominal delivery kit contains nine motherboard stands which are not pre-installed within the casing. Motherboard tray features a dedicated hole for unimpeded installation and deinstallation of CPU cooler without the need to remove the board. Cable management is realized via a set of couplings and stamped eyelets. The clipboard is fixed with the assistance of six planar latches. Power supply unit is mounted to the back panel by means of screws; it is possible to located it with upper and lower fan localization. All 5.25-inch, 3.5-inch drives are mounted with the help of special fixtures or plastic plates with studs; 2.5-inch drive is fixed directly to the bottom plate by a few nominal screws.
