Motherboard Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z Review

Asus has been taking a leading position in the supply of motherboards to the PC hardware market for a long time. For example, its Republic of Gamers series has been enjoying great popularity among customers for more than six years already. Besides, the company was a pioneer to introduce ROG in its products to guarantee an unmatched performance and wide range of available facilities. Crosshair model was the first to implement ROG in its basis, and the latest Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z motherboard is a direct follower of this approach.

Background

Motherboard model Crosshair V Formula-Z is developed in ATX form-factor (305x244 mm dimensions), employs AMD 990FX/SB950 chipset and is ready to house CPUs from AMD AM3+ (Sempron 100/Athlon II/Phenom II/FX). Memory subsystem consists of four DIMM slots estimated for DDR3 memory type that is able to operate in two-channel mode at 1066MHz-2400MHz frequency. The model is known to support Extreme Memory Profile options and is compatible with Windows XP, 7, 8 OS platforms. This board uses HyperTransport 3.0 (5.2 GT/s) system rail.

The nominal delivery set totally corresponds to the motherboard's class. Hence, the user will find in it all components necessary for its hassle-free installation and further adjustment: detailed user's guidelines, DVD with dedicated software, SLI bridge (for 3-Way SLI configuration), CrossFire bridge, plug for the rear panel, six SATA cables, usual SLI bridge, a couple of Q-Connector sockets, and USB-AA cable for ROG Connect.

Design and Supported Interfaces

Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z is a combination of black, red and white colors. The implemented PCB counts eight layers that approve the board's high-end status. The manufacturer applied traditional color distribution of memory slots to facilitate their distribution on channels. The upper PCB layer consists of a maze of tracks from the CPU to the memory modules. Power subsystem is represented by four power sockets; additional CPU power supply is realized via 8-contact and 4-contact clogs. CPU power supply is realized via 8+2 phase system. There is also a 4-contact MOLEX that secures the needs of devices located on PCI-e slots.

This model houses eight slots for the connection of fans. All of them feature four contacts and can regulate fan rotational speed by means of PWM technology. All available facilities of the board are realized via a ligament from 990FX northern bridge and SB950 southern bridge. The overall number of PCI Express lines counts 42 items, where four of them are ascribed to A-Link Express III firewall interface. Right to the southern bridge heatsink one can find eight SATA III sockets. They are located parallel to the board to provide enough spacing for the installation of lengthy graphics cards. Six upper sockets are served by a chipset, the two under them – by ASMedia ASM1061 controller. One more ASM1061 controller is employed for eSATA ports located on the rear panel. USB interface allows connecting up to twelve devices at once: there are four USB 3.0 and eight USB 2.0 ports on the board. South bridge is responsible for the functioning of USB 2.0 interface, while ASMedia ASM1042 controller takes responsibility for USB 3.0 interface.

Network facilities are ensured due to Intel 82583V network controller that is characterized by a high bandwidth ratio, stability and low loading on CPU. ITE IT8728F microchip is liable for the control of all system parameters, for PS/2 port and for fan operation. In addition, the motherboard accommodates a unique TPU chip responsible for the process of automatic overclocking.

Panel for internal sockets found its place in the bottom part of the motherboard. Here one can see S/P-DIF output, TPM socket, partial Thunderbolt socket, USB panels, and a couple of contacts for the connection of various system buttons. All basic buttons are located in the top-right corner: Start, Reset, GO-BUTTON to activate MemOK!, LN2 switch and SLOW_MODE. The applied audio subsystem deserves some special attention. Controller Realtek ALC898 is its basic component, while the system itself takes all spacing in the bottom-left part.

Upper heatsink is characterized by quite voluminous dimensions, since its main target is cooling down the chief power system and the northern bridge simultaneously. Southern bridge is cooled down by a separate heatsink. All cooling components are fixed with the help of spring-loaded screws. RAM power supply system operates without any heatsinks. The system itself consists of two phases served by ASP1103 controller, 4955N transistors (a pair per phase), six capacitors (560 mF each), and inductors with ferrite mandrels in metallic cases.
