CPU Cooling System Ice Hammer IH-4700 Review

Coolers designed by Ice Hammer have been always noticeable for an appropriate correlation of performance and price. Its cooling system IH-4700 is not an exclusion, since it provides both — perfect cooling effect and attractive final cost. Model IH-4700 is a recipient of the fourth product series which differentiates by an improved framework and more efficient operation. It supports a range of Intel and AMD processors, and features PWM fan controller.

Delivery Set

Cooler Ice Hammer IH-4700 is supplied in a cardbox of medium size. Traditionally, the box contains some technical details about the product and a set of accessories necessary for the installation. The cooler itself is packed in a separate box which involves a subsection for accompanying elements. User's manual contains guidance on the cooler's installation into Intel and AMD platforms. The list of accessories embraces a backplate, a clamping plate, a fixing plate, a set of fixing screws, a thermal compound, and a set of nonconducting paddings.

Framework

1. Heatsink. Ice Hammer IH-4700 is a standard in framework cooler of Tower type. It consists of copper base and six heat pipes with forty-seven beaded heat dissipation plates. The pipes are located in staggered rows, evenly distributing the heat over the heatsink. Thermal contact of plates with heat pipes is accomplished due to mechanical crimping. The implemented heatsink features 127x63x160 dimensions; its ribs accommodate notches on both sides which are called to optimize the airflow.

The availability of soldering between the cooler's base and heat pipes is supposed to be the main framework peculiar feature. Both parts of the base are also soldered. There is a small curve in the central part of the base that aims at delivering sufficient airflow to the CPU components.

2. Fan. Ice Hammer equips its cooling system with a fan of 120 mm dimensional type. It houses seven transparent ribs of yellowish color and characterizes by the integration of PWM option. This option is employed for the automatic alteration of rotational speed, depending on CPU temperature; thus, fan rotational speed might fluctuate between 700-1500 rpm with the noise level of 15-28 dB. This fan model is based on a hydrodynamic bearing that provides for quite continual foolproof operation. In accordance with the claimed data, it is destined to demonstrate up to fifty thousand hours of trouble-proof work.

The fan goes with four-contact power socket. It is installed on a heatsink by means of a plastic cover fixed by 18 hooks. The availability of a cover improves the cooling effect, directing the airflow from the fan through a heatsink.

Installation

Ice Hammer IH-4700 is notable for quite simple installation onto the motherboard. Nominal backplate delivered with the cooler is a universal means for Intel and AMD platforms; such versatility is not frequent in contemporary cooling systems. Therefore, a user initially needs to put elongated screws into dedicated perforations in a backplate which are clamped by plastic nonconducting paddings on the reverse side. Further on, this backplate is fixed to CPU socket on the reverse side of the motherboard by wide knurled screws.

Right after this, the user needs to place a retaining plate with the help of four screws. The final step is to install the heatsink which is fixed by an individual plate. All screws are tightened all the way in order to avoid framework crawling.
