Enclosure Lian Li PC-100 'the Hammer' Review

PC enclosures currently go at various shapes and frameworks. Thus, it's rather simple for a potential consumer to get lost in the abundance of alternatives. Each company tries to release truly unique models, but at the same time, they try to comply with financial possibilities of the targeted audience. Lian Li knows a lot about enclosures and contemporary clientele demands. Its PC-100 'the Hammer' model enchants consumers with original framework and layout peculiarities. Still, those are not the only privileges this enclosure can offer to the users.

Delivery Kit and Integration

Lian Li PC-100 'the Hammer' is delivered in a medium-sized cardbox. The manufacturer is lavish in the accessories and framework elements which are supplied along with the enclosure. Hence, the nominal delivery kit includes: detailed user manual, a separate cardbox with screws (for PSU fixture, for 2.5 inch drives, for 3.5 inch drives, and for motherboard fixture), screws kit with long fretwork, plastic coupling for wires, speaker, plate for server motherboard, four clamping mechanisms for PCI cards, and silicon anti-vibratory paddings for the fixture of drives.

This enclosure model is delivered merely in a single color – black. The casing is made of anodized aluminum and goes in midi-tower form factor. It features 210x472x530 mm dimensions. The design might be characterized as classical, though clipboard speaks of some refinement. Both side plates are blind without any ventilation grids. The most extraordinary thing of the Hammer is the unusual placement of the motherboard: it is located back to front with the rear part of the board on the frontal part of the casing. Such technological approach allows the airflow to get directly to the CPU; at the same time, side localization of bays for hard/SSD drives facilitates better blow off.

Lian Li PC-100 'the Hammer' is supposed to be multi-functional. It promotes for the installation of ATX, micro-ATX, XL-ATX, and E-ATX motherboards, and permits the installation of graphic cards of up to 400 mm in length. It has got a couple of 5.25 inch external bays in the top part of the clipboard (covered by removable plugs), six 3.5 inch and eight 2.5 inch internal bays for drives. In addition, this enclosure is equipped with an advanced cooling system involving two 140 mm fans and one 120 mm fan.

The clipboard contains two control buttons (power supply and reloading), ventilation grids, and the tip-up doors which cover the motherboard outputs. There are no ports for the connection of external devices. The clipboard is easily removable and grants free access to the internal components.

The rear plate resembles the clipboard of standard chassis. The basic peculiarity is the localization of PSU. It should be placed not in the bottom part of the casing but in the top part; there is a special perforation for the convenient PSU installation, as well as holders and screws for reliable fixture. Nearly all spacing of the rear plate is alloted for two 140 mm fans. They are called to blow-off the air from the chassis. Besides, the manufacturer left two perforations for the water cooling system cables. The bottom and top plates are totally blind without ventilation grids.

Cooling System

Lian Li PC-100 'the Hammer' is supplied with three nominal fans. The first 120 mm is located on the frontal plate, and the other two 140 mm fans – on the rear plate. There is no possibility to integrate more fans within the casing. The frontal fan goes with three-contact power socket and is predestined to create a positive pressure within the chassis; it blows-in cool air and transmits it to the CPU cooler. Its average rotational speed equals to 1200 rpm. Additionally, this fan is furnished with a removable anti-dust filter.

Both 140 mm fans go also with three-contact power sockets but are called to blow-out the hot air. Their average rotational speed approximates 1000 rpm. They are delivered with Molex adapter. The chief peculiarity of rear fans is that they're furnished with nickel-based grids for security and anti-vibratory means.

It should be stated that the integrated cooling system is void of speed rotation controller; that is why, it's impossible to control the speed manually.

The internal layout of the chassis is made with appropriate airflow and functionality in mind. The motherboard is placed backwards on the integrated tray and hexagonal stands. Cable management should be given special attention: all the cables are placed under the motherboard tray and got outside through the dedicated holes on the rear plate. The board's tray contains a square hole located opposite the CPU socket; it must facilitate the unimpeded access to the CPU cooler backplate. In its turn, this permits the user to install or deinstall the cooler without motherboard removal.
