SSD Adata S511 Review

The galaxy of SSD developers multiplies like a house on fire. There is nothing to wonder about this fact as practically all established and developing companies, that specialize in drives design, consider themselves in duty bound to produce, at least, a single model of SSD. Adata company decided not to watch the progress in the sidelines and introduces its S511 model on the basis of SandForce SF-2281 controller. This is not the first model of this manufacturer, but it’s, undoubtedly, distinguished by high-end performance showings. SSDs on SandForce platforms of the new generation enrapture not only average customers but IT specialists as well.

Adata S511 has got a typical to such class of products design: black casing with chamfered angles, a couple of stickers with a serial number and other specifications. The customer will get the SSD together with other accessories, including the fixing carrier-adapter of 3.5’’ dimension type, and a kit of screws for the installation in PC chassis.
Specifications and Platform

ADATA S511 specifications are common with the analogous SSDs on the base of SandForce top modification controllers:
— volume capacity: 120 GB;
— form-factor: 2.5’’ SATA;
— flash-memory: synchronic NAND;
— interface: SATA 6 GB/sec;
— performance: consecutive reading speed equals to 550 MB/sec; consecutive writing speed equals to 520 MB/sec; maximal speed of random writing (for 4 Kb blocks), IOPS approximates 85000.

This SSD is furnished with a synchronic 25 nm. NAND memory with ONFI 2.2 interface which is differentiated by the capability of referring to the data twice per cycle. Hence, the theoretical bandwidth of this SSD equals to 133 MB/sec as compared to non-synchronic drives which prove to show up to 50 MB/sec. NAND memory requires favorable conditions to show double performance: non-activity of background cell cleanup, idle slot of the controller, etc.). Nevertheless, even on unfavorable conditions ONFI 2.2 interface is capable to ensure the perceptible speed increase.

The architecture of 120 GB model involves eight channels. Each of the channels is able to support up to two devices with the possibility of two-way interleaving: the alternate reference to different crystals on one channel without its lockout in case the other channel is in use. Such technology secures high efficiency of interleaving and advanced performance characteristics.

Tests of SSD Adata S511 were accomplished on the basis of Intel Z68 platform with the connection to SATA 6 Gbit/sec ports; controller used to work in AHCI mode. Just before the testing, SSD was populated with temporary files which ensured the exclusive access during the testing. After five minutes’ downtime, a new section had been created. Such manipulations were necessary to achieve the utmost conditions for testing. The tests included a set of testing packages which were called to estimate the SSD according to multiple parameters:
1. HD Tune 5.0 application was called to measure the linear reading from SSD.
2. AS SSD Benchmark 1.6.4237.30508 was destined to realize the synthetic estimation of SSD linear speed, of speeds in multithread mode, and of access time.
3. CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1 x64 was designated to realize the synthetic estimation of speed on random access by 4 Kb blocks, of SSD linear speed, of speeds in multithread mode, and of access time.
4. Futuremark PCMark 7 System Storage served the testing route needs oriented on the PC system drive estimation.
5. Futuremark PCMark Vantage HDD Suite served the testing route needs emulating the user work in the most popular applications.

All testing results of Adata S511 proved the advantages of new SandForce SF-2281 modifications. Despite the fact that Adata company can boast only a few SSD models, its new S511 can enter into the echelon of high-end products and compete with the renowned SSD manufacturers.
