‘Ice-Cold’ Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 780 Ti HerculeZ X3 Ultra Review

The newest top GPUs designed by Nvidia and AMD are characterized by higher temperatures and higher noise levels, as compared to the GPUs of the previous generation. That is the price of more power. Nonetheless, average customers cannot be satisfied with efficiency only, so they were patiently waiting for non-reference products with more appropriate cooling. Inno3D always tries its best to comply with the demands of exacting PC enthusiasts, gamers and home users, hence the release of iChill GeForce GTX 780 Ti HerculeZ X3 Ultra graphics cards was much a desire. This model offers an ideal combination of performance along with decreased operational temperatures.

Design and Key Specs

At-a-glance new Inno3D’s creation resembles its predecessors in design matters. This is a voluminous graphics card with bright metallic elements, a three-slot cooler, and three fans with traditional to iChill series ‘snowflake’ stickers. Its side facet houses a dedicated space for iChill HerculeZ logo; the latter is illuminated with white backlight.

The overall length of the framework makes up 30 cm. The reverse side of the PCB is covered by a metallic plate. Upon the whole, iChill GeForce GTX 780 Ti HerculeZ X3 Ultra employs the reference PCB design with 8-phase VRM. Therein, six phases are allocated to the GPU, while the two left – to the memory modules. In order to power this graphics card, the user will need to install an efficient PSU of not less than 600 W. At the same time, on the top load the card will consume about 265 W power.

Connectivity with the monitors is realized via four video ports of the rear panel: HDMI, DisplayPort, and two DVI. The maximal supported digital resolution equals to 2560x1600 pixels, whereas the maximal supported analog resolution makes up 2048x1536 pixels.

The heart of the card is GK110 chip with 2880 stream processors and 240 TMUs. Its nominal clock frequency has been increased from standard 875 MHz to 1006 MHZ with an overclocking potential to rise up to 1072 MHz (on Boost Clock activation). The implemented 3 GB GDDR5 memory is composed of twelve SK Hynix H5GQ2H24AFR E2C chips (384-bit interface); its effective clock frequency has also been overclocked from 7000 MHz to 7200 MHz.

This adapter is certified for Windows 8 OS and supports a number of advanced technologies: OpenGL 4.4, 2-way SLI, DirectX 11, PhysX, 3D Vision, CUDA, 3D Vision Surround.

Cooling

The incorporated cooler is much alike the one employed by GTX 780 HerculeZ 3000. It consists of a two-section heatsink, five heat-pipes and three fans. The larger section is pierces by three pipes and the smaller one – by two pipes correspondingly. An increased amount of heatsink fins enlarges heat dissipation area. Inno3D has added three fans of 92 mm dimensional type (Colorful CF12915S) to the framework; they are connected to the general power bus on the board. Fans are responsible for the overall thermal conditions of the card, keeping the maximal GPU temperature within the ranges of 97 C.

To continue, power elements are cooled down by a separate heatsink plate, which simultaneously embraces memory chips. A pair of springy pads on the plate’s surface supports a voluminous cooler.

Shipping Contents

The iChill GeForce GTX 780 Ti HerculeZ X3 Ultra comes in an attractive cardbox with the following shipping contents: user’s manual, CD with software, a mousepad, a DVI/D-Sub adapter, power adapters from two MOLEX to PCIe 8-pin, and login to 3D Mark.

Testing

According to GPU-Z utility, ASIC Quality parameter equals to 75.8%. This graphics card demonstrates quite striking performance in the majority of benchmarks and games. For instance, in Crysis: Warhead the GPU runs mainly at 1137 MHz with the peak index of 1150 MHz. At the same time in a more demanding test – Unique Valley – the operational frequency range decreased to 1097-1124 MHz. Therein, GPU temperature does not exceed 63 C after twelve minutes of intensive load, with fans running at 43% of their overall speed. These are rather comforting results for the top-tier adapter.
