Offbeat Chassis Cooler Master HAF XB Review

Cooler Master is one of the companies that always amaze potential users by high-quality and, at the same time, offbeat framework of hardware items. For instance, its High Air Flow (HAF) series of PC cases is differentiated by a quite uncommon design, combined with a powerful cooling system. Cooler Master HAF XB is probably the most outstanding model within the series, since it is something like a borderland between an open stand and a modding case. However, offbeat framework is not the only attraction of this product. Let’s find out some other advantages of this case.

General Peculiarities

Cooler Master HAF XB is compatible with ATX/micro-ATX/mini-ITX motherboards and ATX PS2 power supply units. The case is made of steel with some plastic inclusions. It features two bays for 5.25-inch drives, the same number of bays for 3.5-inch drives, and six bays for 2.5-inch devices. Expansion facilities are introduced by seven slots. Internal spacing is enough to house 334 mm long graphics adapters, 180 mm high CPU coolers, 180 mm long PSUs, and 240 mm long frontal heatsink.

In regard to cooling, this chassis goes with a couple of onboard 120 mm fans (1800 RPM, 21 dB), located in the frontal part; additionally, it stipulates the integration of one 120 mm rear or two 80 mm rear fans, as well as one 200 mm fan on the top.

Design

Exterior design of HAF XB resembles a middle-size rectangular box, which features a lot of ventilation grids. Despite a horizontal orientation, the chassis might contest mini-tower vertical counterparts, since it is estimated for the integration of rather voluminous vertical CPU heatsinks and water-cooling solutions.

The top part of the frontal panel consists totally of a ventilation grid that covers two system fans. The central part contains Power and Reset buttons, red LED-indicator, two audio slots, and a couple of USB 3.0 ports. The lower part houses two bays for 5.25-inch bays and two removable X-Docks for ‘hot swapping’ of 3.5/2.5-inch drives.

Both side panels feature identical ventilation grids and plastic carrying handles. The panels are fixed by means of thumbscrews and do not require any tools. The central part of the top panel is all about ventilation grid, although there are some model variations that go with a transparent acrylic window. It should be underlined that there is no bay for a 200 m top fan in those modifications.

The rear panel consists of three bays for fans, a plug for motherboard sockets, an additional ventilation grid, and a dedicated PSU mounting frame. The base is peculiar by a removable ventilation panel and the availability of four feet with rubber stickers.

Internal Framework

Cooler Master HAF XB’s internal framework can be described as ‘two-storeyed’. The top storey is intended for the motherboard and cooling solution (either air cooler or liquid-cooling item). The board is mounted onto the removable facet that uncovers the gates to the bottom storey. The latter is intended for the installation of drives and a PSU. Therein, there is no need to remove the motherboard in order to get to the bottom section, as it’s possible to get there by removing one of the side panels.

Customer Experience

Upon the whole, this offbeat PC chassis from Cooler Master makes a good impression on potential customers. First of all, unusual design, combined with an amazing capaciousness, draws a prime attention. Second of all, enthusiasts and overclockers can’t but appreciate the possibility to incorporate liquid-cooling solution with two heatsinks. It might be supplemented by six air fans, located at all case sections.

Finally, all customers without exclusion will esteem the tool-free mounting of all key components. Thanks to dedicated clamps and thumbscrews, all mounting and demounting activities are as easy as ABC.
