Network Storage Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 Cloud Edition Review

Network storage solutions have become an integral assistant not only in large corporate systems but also in compact home-based platforms. They are a perfect match for people who need to work with a huge amount of information and who care about performance and safety. Iomega is one of the companies that frequently introduces ever newer storage solutions. Thereby, the manufacturer has recently upgraded its two-disk network storage StorCenter ix2-200 to Cloud Edition and equipped a new product with an advanced firmware. According to the claimed characteristics, StorCenter ix2-200 Cloud Edition boasts easy adjustment of remote access, possibility to share files with other users, and many more benefits.

Design and Layout

It should be noted that the upgrade didn't touch upon design of the network storage. StorCenter ix2-200 Cloud Edition has got aluminum external casing, plastic rear and frontal panels, and three LED indicators. The clipboard also accommodates a couple of buttons, Power and File Copy (from USB port). Bays for the installation of winchesters found their place on the rear panel; a couple of USB ports, network port with the integrated indicators, and Clear button are located next to the bays. The nominal delivery kit contains all traditional elements: external PSU (12V 4A), CD with applets, a drive, and a brief user manual.

The implemented internal layout resembles the previous version of the upgraded storage. Thus, this model is based on ARM processor Marvell 6281 (1 GHz) and is equipped with 32 MB of flash-memory, 256 MB RAM, USB-hub and an additional network chip. Winchesters are installed into frames fixed by screws. This device is cooled down by a centrifugal fan; ventilation grid is located in the top part of the rear panel, while the air blow-in is realized via perforated clipboard. The fan can be automatically disabled if the temperature drops lower the predetermined margin. This promotes for the absence of noise on the majority of operational modes.

Connection of External Devices

StorCenter ix2-200 Cloud Edition is furnished with three USB 2.0 ports for the connection of external drives, Bluetooth adapter, UPS or printer. Bluetooth adapter can be employed for the automatic file writing into a specified folder in mobile devices. UPS promotes for the heightened reliability measures taken against sudden power interruption and, as a result, loss of data. External drives can be connected by means of USB-hubs. This model supports various configurations with several sections and file systems, such as XFS, FAT32, NTFS, and others.

Setup

This network drive is delivered with the pre-installed winchesters Seagate Barracuda LP (1 TB each drive). There is no possibility to change the nominal drives to some other items.

The upgraded firmware is located on a predefined section of the drives; this implies that the device is ready for utilization right after start-up. The nominal CD contains a program for the control and monitoring under Linux, Windows and Mac OS platforms. In addition, it contains QuickProtect applet for backup and Twonky mediaserver. Web-interface is available in several languages which can be chosen due to the dedicated menu options. The user is able to setup the work of the device according to the HTTPS encoding protocol.

The design of web-interface has undergone certain alterations. The left part of the menu is dedicated to a list of settings groups; when choosing a necessary item, the central part of the menu highlights the list of sub-sections. Network settings include IP-address name, Jumbo Frame, Active Directory connection settings, etc. There is no separate DDNS client, however the user is able to activate the function of remote access.

Control over disk array configurations is accomplished with the help of available modes: RAID0, RAID1, or JBOD. It should be mentioned that user information is not preserved when the mode is altered. When the power supply is absent, the storage automatically disables winchester power. This model supports simultaneously a few network access protocols: FTP, NFS, SFTP, AFP. If used as a part of home-based local system, there is no need to employ access control.

To continue, there are a number of system settings a customer can employ. With the purpose to get error-free functioning of various options, it's recommended to setup the Date and Time of the integrated clock; this is completed by means of manual settings or NTP server facilities. Event log is rather accurate.

Performance

Testing results demonstrated that StorCenter ix2-200 Cloud Edition is a perfect match for the entry level home-based systems with a limited amount of clients. Hence, the maximal data Read speed approximates 40 MB/sec, and Write speed – 50 MB/sec in array with interlacing mode.
