Mini PC HP Elite Slice: Style Your Work!

Introduction

You can hardly surprise anyone by Ultra-compact PCs - the category has firmly taken its place in the market. In this case, most such devices are created according to the tested scenario: a tiny motherboard, a laptop (or a weak desktop) processor with a minimum heat dissipation, a RAM and a of a compact size. Some more ports should be added - as installing an expansion card in such a computer is impossible in principle. But what if there is another way to add new features to the mini PC? Yes there is. Today we have the review of the compact desktop computer HP Elite Slice. Let’s come closer.

Design

By itself HP Elite Slice is a desktop PC for business or non-addicting home users with an outstanding design and modest (165x165x35 mm) size. But on the bottom panel there is a port that allows you to connect additional slice modules that extend the capabilities of the computer. Yes, a similar idea has already been implemented once - Acer released Revo Build in the 2015. But it was equipped only with weak processors Celeron and Pentium.

HP Elite Slice - it's not some kind of plastic box, the design is thought over and it doesn’t play the last role for sure. And developers thought about it also considering the functionality: for example, the copper grille of the radiator, which peeps out the slots under the top cover, looks beautiful, and allows removing heat from the system efficiently and without unnecessary noise.

The "base" of the HP Elite Slice has several options: one with a fingerprint sensor on the side, another with the same sensor and a touchpad on top with call control buttons in the application for Skype for Business.

Main Features

Slice uses Intel's Core i3, i5, and i7 processors with a 35-watt thermal package and with the T-index. Of course, this is not a full-fledged 65-watt desktop solution, but they are not much inferior in performance, but compared to laptop chips in mini-PC type Intel NUC.

On the PC motherboard there are two connectors for "laptop" DDR4 memory modules, access to them is quite simple. You can go further and get to the M.2 connector, installing a modern high-speed SSD in it.

The set of ports is not too wide, but for a mini-PC it's adequate: HP Elite Slice has 2 traditional USB 3.0 ports, 2 USB-C (USB 3.1, one of the ports on the side), HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet and a Kensington lock connector. If you need, you can connect up to three monitors. The power button is located originally - on the rounded rear right corner of the device. The functionality of the front panel was sacrificed for the sake of beautiful design, there are no ports there. On the side, for conditionally "fast" access, we decided to put USB-C instead of traditional USB, which is necessary for the overwhelming majority of flash drives used today. They will have to be stuck behind. Given that one of the USB ports already takes away the receiver of the wireless keyboard and mouse, the third classic USB on the side of the computer would definitely not be in the way.

We need to tell you more about several technologies hidden in a compact package: HP Elite Slice is aimed first of all at the corporate market, that's why it uses Intel processors with vPro technology, which includes both hardware security functions and secures remote administration capabilities. Also here, HP Sure Start technology is implemented, which ensures the computer's security at the BIOS level before the operating system is loaded. So the computer will boot only with the original BIOS from HP, and if it detects changes in the BIOS made by malware, it will overwrite the current firmware with the original from the protected backup.

Conclusion

Who is this PC for? First of all, for corporate customers: based on it, you can create a manager's workplace, provide it to other employees who are critical to high PC performance, but do not want to clutter the desk with a computer in the tower. Finally, complete with the conference module HP Elite Slice becomes the best equipment for meetings with remote employees.

Also HP Elite Slice can be useful to those who work at home, but must regularly communicate with other remote colleagues or those who work in the office. Finally, this is a worthy version of a home PC: powerful but quiet, for those who are not going to run high-demanding graphics games or "heavy" applications for 3D graphics, video editing, etc.

Pros:

+4-core processors in a compact and stylish package
+Modules- "slices" expand the possibilities
+You can add memory and drives with the M.2 interface independently, the ability to replace the processor
+Optimal choice of an enterprise PC of "above average"

Cons:

-The choice of USB (and not Thunderbolt 3) as a data exchange protocol between the "slices" limits the capabilities of the system
-Available modules perform not the most requested functions
-Wireless keyboards and mouse use the USB-receiver instead of Bluetooth receiver
