Graphics Card MSI GTX 770 Gaming Review

MSI Gaming product line has already managed to win the hearts of inveterate gamers, overclockers and enthusiasts, due to remarkable performance and a perfect overclocking potential. Gaming series includes a set of high-end motherboards, as well as graphics solutions. The first ones come with automatic overclocking facilities and network controllers that improve the quality of connection while gaming; the second ones, with MSI GTX 770 Gaming in particular, bring gaming experience to a new, higher level. However, let’s come closer to the deal and give a detailed review of GTX 770 Gaming model.

Framework and Hardware Base

Graphics adapter MSI GTX 770 Gaming is based on an original PCB with an enforced power supply system. The heart of the item is GK104 chip that features 1536 stream processors, 32 ROPs and 128 TMUs. A black aluminum plank covers almost the whole PCB surface; it is fixed by eight screws at the back and two screws at one of the side panels. This plank contains special recess points at the sites where high power elements are localized. At the reverse side it features some thermal rubbers for a perfect contact with transistors and memory chips. It’s possible to scrutiny the hardware base only after the plank is demounted.

Therefore, the right side of the PCB accommodates eighteen Low Rds(on) transistors and six super ferrite chokes (each choke takes three transistors). GPU power supply is secured by a dedicated PWM controller ON Semiconductor NCP4206, located at the bottom-right section.

Memory is introduced by eight Samsung K4G20325FD chips of GDDR5 type and an overall capacity of 2 GB (still, MSI has recently announced the model with 4GB memory capacity); all of them employ 256-bit interface. The rear panel boasts four different video interfaces: HDMI, DVI-D, DVI-I, and DisplayPort. The card’s average TDP level equals to 230 W.

Cooling System

The implemented cooler, Twin Frozr IV, seems rather familiar in design at the first sight. Nonetheless, on a closer look it becomes vivid that it uses a completely different framework. Heatsink, along with fans, is mounted to the PCB by means of four screws. Thermal interface has been substituted by a gray-silver dense substance that provides for a more efficient cooling process. Five heatpipes, which take the origin at the copper nickel-plated base, pierce a set of aluminum plates, forming the ribs. All joint sites are well-soldered.

The lid with fans is fixed to the heatsink with the help of four screws. The lid features Gaming coloring, a brand logo on its front top, and a red stripe above the logo. The two fans – Power Logic PLD10010S12HH – are developed according to a brand MSI Propeller Blade technology. They are distinguished by an unusual blade shape that eventually reduces the noise level on rotation.

Nominal Frequencies and Overclocking

Generally, MSI GTX 770 Gaming is estimated for a continual gaming process. Still, there are timeframes when GPU lies in rest. On standard operational conditions and absence of loading clock frequencies automatically drop to 135 MHz/162 MHz, for GPU and memory respectively. At that rate, GPU warms up to 29 C with fans rotating at 1050 RPM and producing about 28 dB noise level.

To continue, when it goes about loading, — let’s take MSI Kombustor application, for instance – the situation with clock frequencies changes dramatically. The integration of an updated GPU Boost 2.0 technology ensures that frequency index starts rising once the loading is more intense. Hence, the clock index rises up to 1111 MHz, but when GPU temperature trespasses the permissible level, this index drops to 1084 MHz.

Overclocking facilities of GTX 770 Gaming card are provided by MSI Afterburner utility. Since the latter hasn’t been updated since January, the card couldn’t show off all its might in full. MSI Gaming App is the most optimal means for testing. This app features three working modes: Eco, Game and Default. This adapter operates in Default mode by default; switching to Eco mode results in a more quiet operation but a bit lower Boost frequencies, whereas switching to Game mode results in higher frequency index and higher noise level. Thus, on Game mode Boost clock rises to 1150 MHz, while memory runs at a claimed 7010 MHz index in all modes. Finally, fan rotational speed on overclocking keeps on 56% mark with 1650-1700 RPM index.
