Overview of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Gaming Video Card

The NVIDIA Company continues to conquer new peaks of graphics performance. The latest high-profile novelties are video accelerators GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and Titan Xp. The second is an exclusive product with a small number manufactured and an extremely high price. But the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti will become the new flagship of mass production models which significantly raises the performance bar.

The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is manufactured using the GP102 GPU based on the Pascal architecture. This chip has previously become the basis for the super-powerful solution of Titan X (Pascal), and recently released even faster Titan Xp. The GP102 processor consists of six graphic clusters of five SM multiprocessors.

Configuration

In its full configuration, the GP102 has 3840 CUDA stream processors and 240 texture units. The memory bandwidth is increased to 384 bits due to 12 memory controllers. The crystal is produced on the basis of 16-nm process technology and has 12 billion transistors. Perhaps, because of such a complex structure, the first Titan X based on the GP102 received an incomplete configuration with 3584 cores and 224 texture units. The configuration for the new serial flagship GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is similar. There are also 88 new ROP blocks with 2.8 MB of L2 cache (GP104 has only 2 MB). The flexible structure of the new memory system has made it possible to achieve an unusual configuration of the bus with a total capacity of 352 bits that is why the memory size of the video card is 11 GB. In this case, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti memory operates at a record frequency of 11 GHz.

After the release of GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, NVIDIA introduced the full version of GP102 in Titan Xp. GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is identical to Titan Xp in the configuration of operating frequencies. The base value of the GPU in 1480 MHz is provided even in the most extreme operating conditions. GPU Boost technology increases the core frequency until the power and temperature limits are exceeded. The average Boost value is 1582 MHz but the maximum is traditionally higher.

GeForce GTX 1080 Ti combines all the advantages of Pascal architecture and supports all the technologies relevant for GeForce GTX 1080. The following are among them: high efficiency of memory bandwidth due to progressive methods of data compression in frame buffer. Also, a certain advantage is provided by tile caching when the image is divided into fragments (tiles) which allows optimizing the processing of geometry and pixels for each tile. This method allows to use the resources of the L2 cache more efficiently, reducing the load on external memory.

And all this is combined with a 352-bit bus and a record frequency of GDDR5X chips. With a physical capacity of 484 GB/s the theoretical peak can reach 1.2 TB/s. However, the effectiveness of additional improvements depends heavily on each specific application.

NVIDIA solutions are well optimized for work in the DirectX 11 environment, which is provided by many years of support from engineers and programmers. Thanks to the availability of convenient tools, this API still remains the main one for many game developers. DirectX 12 provides more control over GPU resources, allows to better use multi-threaded capabilities of processors and more efficiently perform combined operations, combining graphical and other calculations, including thanks to Async Compute. NVIDIA Pascal solutions fully support all the capabilities of the new API at the hardware level, including advanced asynchronous calculations.

The situation with software support is constantly improving as well. Along with the launch of GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, a new driver has been released which seriously accelerates a number of games under DirectX 12. And the finalization of the drivers has made it possible to achieve a noticeable acceleration in the already mentioned Rise of The Tomb Raider, Hitman and other games.

The company also expands the possibilities of applying the GameWorks effects, introducing support for the new DirectX 12 for them. This initiative is based on the tools of ready-made graphics technologies and effects that are easy to integrate and improve the game visual performance. NVIDIA GameWorks support is presented in many modern games, some technologies are supported in the latest versions of the Unreal Engine, Unity and Amazon Lumberyard engines.

The technology of background shading HBAO+ is widely applied giving a better and more detailed picture of SSAO and other algorithms. The Volumetric Lighting Simulation technology has shown itself perfectly.

Another example of GameWorks is the technology of HairWorks simulating complex hair and wool. Among the new effects Turf Effects should be mentioned to simulate a complex herb with separate geometry of grass blades.

Simulation of various dynamic environments is a complex task allowing to solve different GameWorks tools. Dynamically changing in real time water can be realized on the basis of WaveWorks, Flex technology allows simulating the behavior of friable solids, Flow simulates flows and gases, Blast can be used for destructible objects, NvCloth will allow realistic fabrics to be realized.

Optimization for the new API includes support for asynchronous calculations, which allows the GPU to more efficiently calculate such effects and get real acceleration on new video cards. And according to NVIDIA experts, Async Compute support provides twofold acceleration of the calculation of the effects of Flex.

New GameWorks supports DirectCompute and operate on any graphics devices. So users can play with new effects even on AMD video cards. However, currently almost all effects work on Radeon.

The GeForce Experience software package constantly adds new capabilities, which automatically optimizes the game settings for a particular user’s graphics card, updates drivers and uses additional functions.

Part of these functions is to capture video using ShadowPlay. The built-in GPU video block deals with encoding, so there is practically no performance drop in the game, the video output quality is very high, the resolution of 4K is supported. And the new expansion of ShadowPlay Highlights will simplify the capture of bright moments. The program automatically tracks a player’s activity and records the most intense game scenes.

Ansel gives players incredible opportunities. The application allows creating screenshots from unusual angles with a free camera, apply color filters, create panoramic images and increase the resolution of the final image.

Virtual reality VR is one of the intensively developing areas. VR systems have found application not only in the entertainment industry, but in specialized tasks as well. Special techniques for projecting images allow saving GPU resources and speeding up VR processing. NVIDIA VRWorks technologies provide acceleration of rendering in the virtual reality mode from 20% to 60% and higher.

The combination of maximum performance and technological support makes the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti the best choice for those who want to touch the world of virtual reality.

GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition Outlook

The new flagship NVIDIA offers improved cooling and enhanced power. The silver case is combined with black elements and large screws which, together with numerous bends, create a special «metallized» industrial style inherent to GeForce graphics cards. The total length of the adapter is 26.5 cm.

The reverse side is protected by a metal plate with a relief pattern and the name of the video card. On the side there is a large GeForce inscription with green backlighting. In the corner there are two power connectors with 6 and 8 pins.

As a result of the design optimization the DVI socket has been abolished. This gives an opportunity for leaving more space on the rear panel and making more holes for air blowing slightly increasing the efficiency of the «turbine». There are four interface sockets left: three DisplayPort and one HDMI.

The plate on the reverse side consists of two halves. Its main function is protective but one of the plates is in contact with the power controller on the surface of the textolite, thereby cooling it.

The general layout of the cooler looks quite familiar, all like the GeForce GTX 1080 and earlier video cards. A large base covers the board, removing heat from all important components in the power circuit and memory chips. There is an additional radiator at the edge of the board for better cooling of the power unit. A graphics chip has a removable black radiator. The GPU radiator does not differ from the standard one in size and design.

At the basement there is a large evaporation chamber. Improving its effectiveness is declared. In combination with a large number of holes on the rear panel, this can have a small positive effect for increasing the efficiency of the standard cooler. It should be noted that this type of cooling has coped well in the GeForce GTX 980 Ti with its 250W TDP.

In comparison with the GeForce GTX 1080, the printed circuit board circuitry is more complicated and has more phases.

The power core subsystem consists of seven phases with two transistors per channel. There are two phases in the GDDR5X memory power supply node.

Full marking of the processor is GP102-350-K1-A1. In this case it operates 3584 stream processors of 3840 possible. 11 Micron 6XA77 D9VRL memory microcircuits in total amount 11 GB are soldered.

The base core frequency is 1481 MHz with Boost Clock 1582 MHz. The memory data transfer rate corresponds to 11 GHz.

According to the temperature-noise characteristics, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti does not differ much from the GeForce GTX 1080. But if the younger video card has a temperature limit of 83°C, the Ti version has 84°C. When operated on an open bench in a room with a temperature of 22°C, the fan rotates at a game load of about 2400 rpm, which is slightly higher compared to the GeForce GTX 1080. The noise is moderate.

Brief Boost bursts at modes switching reach 1898 MHz, but the midrange Boost is closer to the level of 1700 MHz and lower. In Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the core frequency varied between 1683-1797 MHz, in Tom Clancy's The Division approximately between 1658-1749 MHz.

It should be noted that in such a powerful video card with a TDP of 250 W, the final level of frequencies will partially depend on the operating conditions. In a tight case under severe temperature conditions, the limiting temperature will be reached faster leading to a faster Boost decrease. But since this is a top product, it is assumed that the potential buyer will provide normal conditions and get the most from ones video card.

Overclocking allows to further increase this maximum. With the increase in the power limit to a maximum (120%) and the acceleration of the blowing fan, the average GPU frequency is maintained at 2000 MHz and lower.

In simpler modes and simpler games, the frequencies could exceed 2 GHz approaching its maximum. In any case, GeForce GTX 1080 Ti overclocking requires powerful cooling. On a conventional video card it is possible with manual fan acceleration to extremely noisy mode. This is suitable for testing the capabilities of the video card in 3DMark, but there is no practical use for such overclocking. It is possible just on non-reference video cards with improved cooling.

Conclusions

With the release of GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, NVIDIA has consolidated its position as a leader in the graphics device market. A serious advantage of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti over the GeForce GTX 1080 is provided by the use of a new GP102 graphics chip with 3,584 stream processors. Simultaneously, the memory bandwidth is increased – the 352-bit bus is combined with the record frequencies of the GDDR5X chips. All this makes the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti the fastest graphics accelerator for games providing the maximum possible performance. The only alternative is Titan Xp, which will have to be ordered in foreign stores and needs serious overpay for every additional percent of productivity.

The advantage of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti over the GeForce GTX 1080 is 25-40%. But it should be noted that the maximum advantage is noticeable in the highest resolution of 4K. In simpler modes, the limitations imposed by the performance of other components of the PC highly influence the video card. And if one focuses on the heaviest games and 4K mode, then one can safely talk about a stable separation of 33-35% with a maximum of 40%. All this is combined with an equally serious increase in energy consumption and heat generation. The cooler of the reference versions of the Founders Edition does a good job of cooling on moderate noise levelswith a core temperature limitation of 84°C. This allows playing comfortably at maximum performance, but only with standard frequencies. If most of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti opportunities are to be used, this requires serious improvement in a cooling system.

Along with the development of technical devices, NVIDIA is also engaged in providing constant software support. Improving the drivers allows to realize the same advantage in the performance of DirectX 12 in some games which was not initially offered. The set of effects that can be implemented in games using NVIDIA GameWorks tools is constantly expanding along with the software functionality. Ansel gives incredible opportunities for obtaining beautiful screenshots, and ShadowPlay will get more opportunities to automatically capture video of spectacular playing moments.
