ECS Z270H4-I Mini-ITX Motherboard Review

On the basis of chipset Intel Z270 ECS creates a new compact ECS Z270H4-I motherboard in Mini-ITX format. It is supplied with one Socket LGA1151 slot. The motherboard supports installation of Intel Skylake and Intel Kaby Lake CPUs. The RAM subsystem consists of two DIMM slots, which support up to 32Gb of DDR4-3200 memory standard in two-channel regime. Disk subsystem consists of four SATA 6 GB/s and one M.2 ports. There is PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot to connect cards.

Audio, I/O & Network Facilities

The Audio subsystem is based on 8-channel codec Realtek ALC1150. Realtek Dragon 8118AS and Intel I219V chips function as LAN-controllers. Voltage regulation is provided by six basic phases.

The I/O panel has dedicated space to set a Wi-Fi module and antennas. There is also the extra hardware to support the M.2 Key-E module depending on your choice. The above-mentioned I/O panel space includes six USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports, a PS/2 port for a mouse or a keyboard. There are also DisplayPort and HDMI video outputs for the CPUs onboard graphics, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, five analog audio jacks, and a digital optical audio port. One more advantage is that one of the ports has a Type-C connector.

There are only four SATA ports and there is no possibility to cite HSIO limitations of chipset for the missing connections. The reason of only four SATA ports may be that the space is more dedicated to other circuits, because of the fact that the majority of builders do not use more than four SATA drivers. USB 3.0 header can be found at the front edge and a USB 2.0 header is near the I/O panel, not far from the front-panel audio header. Everything is organized in this way to maximize CPU cooler and graphic card clearance right down to the two fan headers along the top edge.

Because of the Key-E connection for Wi-Fi modules on top, there was need to find some space underneath the Z270H4-I for its Key M (M.2 SSD) connection. Firmware Options

In case of resetting the firmware it drops back to its initial release date of March 9, 2017. Be careful with resetting, because it may cause problems with the programs which are based on relying on accurate dates for licensing purposes. If you still have to reset the firmware, you need to make sure to reset also the clock of the motherboard before you boot an operating system.

To boot from an M.2 drive you are to jump through the advanced menu to the submenu of SATA Configurations and find “Not RST Controlled” and select it. The Z270H4-I uses Intel’s SATA RAID firmware by default.

If to speak about the point for all performance-oriented settings, it is represented as ECS’s Motherboard Intelligent BIOS X. It also includes CPU and DRAM overclocking. One of the disadvantages of it is the failure of its status section to reflect current CPU frequency.
