Disk Station Buffalo Technology LinkStation Mini Review

Up-to-date disk stations for home utilization usually employ from a single up to four hard drives of 3.5-inch form-factor. They are intended to offer sufficient storage capacity and an unmatched performance during operation. LinkStation Mini disk server from Buffalo manufacturers is a compact solution for all home-based data storage needs. Currently, the series is represented by four models: in black and white colors and with drives of 500 GB and 1 TB capacity. One should not confuse these models with those released by this manufacturer several years ago, as today's devices have got a completely new hardware platform.

Design

LinkStation Mini is notable for exceptionally compact dimensions (if considering rival disk stations) which equal to 40x135x82 mm. The casing is made of black glossy plastic and can be adjusted in two positions (vertical and horizontal) due to the availability of rubber feet on the two sides of the device. The frontal panel accommodates a half-transparent strip covering four indicators which correspond to network activity, functional activity, power supply, and status/error. Functional indicator is employed during data copying from USB devices, while status/error indicator sends multiple messages by means of consecutive impulses. The back panel allocates network port, USB 2.0 socket, PSU input and power supply switch.

The nominal delivery set cannot be characterized by the abundance of components and involves only a few items: power supply unit (5V, 2.6A), planar gigabit network cable, CD with software and user manual. The latter two components might be uploaded directly from the manufacturer's site. One might download also firmware update application, NASNavigator2 applet and some other valuable programs.

Framework

Network station from Buffalo Technology consists of two winchesters Seagate Momentus 5400.6 of 500 GB volume capacity, and a circuit board between them. This board is equipped with ARM processor Marvell 88F6281 which operates on 600 MHz, a couple of DDR2 RAM chips (overall capacity – 128 MB), a supplementary network chip Marvell 88E1118, and download flash of 512 KB. The upper and bottom-part ventilation grids are accompanied by thick aluminum plates that are in direct contact with drives casing.

There are no radiators on processor and other micro chips. Winchesters employ passive cooling system that provides for the ultimately low level of noise. Moreover, all the activities are monitored and controlled by the CPU and no other controllers are implemented in this network station.

Layout and Setup

This network station is delivered already with the installed hard drives and is ready to work. The mere thing a customer should do is to connect the station to the power and switch the device on. It should be mentioned that manufacturers did not stipulate the nominal swapping of winchesters. The update of firmware is accomplished with the help of a dedicated applet or a corresponding section in settings. Settings web-interface is protected by a password. There is a possibility to use HTTPS protocol, while the port numbers can't be altered. Connection with the network is realized by means of integrated gigabit controller which supports Jumbo Frames standards; its address can be set manually or via DHCP server.

The two winchesters are able to support the following configurations: RAID0, RAID1 and two separate disks. The file system employs XFS at data section; moreover, the disks accommodate a dedicated section with the type of firmware for restoration activity, the main system section, and some vacant spacing.

Access to the available data is accomplished by AFP, FTP/SFTP, and CIFS/SMB protocols. It should be stressed that there are no special options designated for FTP. The employed server operates as in passive mode so in Unicode. System settings section enables the setup of time&date, working language, settings spill, disk formatting, and some other facilities.

External Devices

Buffalo disk station is furnished with only a single USB 2.0 port which can be employed for the connection with the external drive, printer or UPS. Hubs are not supported by this device. The drives are able to see only the first section; file systems in it can be NTFS (reading only), XFS, EXT3, FAT32. The latter three systems can be formatted directly from web-interface.

In addition, this disk station can be used not only as data storage, but also as web-server with PHP support. There is a possibility to edit php.ini file. The other destination of this device is to be employed as autonomous backup system.
