SSD OCZ Petrol 128 GB Review

Commercial success of the company in IT market depends upon the applied marketing strategies, line of products, and processing technologies. OCZ Technology belongs to the businesses that implement all the above mentioned aspect in their expertise. This allows the company to establish good reputation in SSD segment and win its constant customers. Their lines of products are continually replenishing with the new advanced devices targeted at clients with different needs and financial possibilities. OCZ Petrol series can be attributed to the budgetary products with good performance and good price.

Design and Framework

First of all, it should be mentioned that OCZ Petrol is represented by only two versions with 64 GB and 128 GB volume capacities. Both models are delivered in a standard format with minimum components in the nominal kit. Design of the casing is developed according to the company's prime standards: the lower part is made of metal, while the top of the casing is made of soft plastic. OCZ Petrol goes in traditional brown color. The back part includes a sticker with the product's specifications.

OCZ Petrol 128 GB is based on a circuit board with Indilinx Everest controller which has been already implemented in the other SSD series, Octane, from OCZ manufacturers. The circuit board accommodates sixteen BGA chips of asynchronous flash-memory (released by SK Hynix). Each of the chips is equipped with a single 64-gigabit NAND crystal developed under the 26 nm technology. The implementation of asynchronous flash-memory type is considered to be quite rare event in SSD market due to the modest speed index. However, Indilinx Everest controller operates in 8-channel mode with reiterated alternation; thus, it is able to compensate for the low bandwidth of memory chip interface. Besides, DDR3-1600 cache-memory serves an additional accelerator for SSD OCZ Petrol 128 GB. Integrated Toolbox applet will benefit all customers realizing 'low-level' work. This applet allows upgrading the weaving, the realization of Secure Erase operation, and monitoring of S.M.A.R.T. attributes condition.

To continue, OCZ Petrol employs SATA 6 Gb/sec interface and is backward compatible with 3 Gb/sec. It has got 512 MB of onboard cache and is able to support TRIM, SMART and Background garbage collection technologies. This SSD is characterized by low power consumption index (3W in operational mode and 1.65W in idle mode) and low latency seek time (0.06 ms in reading, 0.09 ms in writing). It is compatible with Linux, Mac OSX and Windows (XP, Vista) platforms.

Spreed Testing

1. Testing of random and consecutive speeds is realized by means of CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1 benchmark. This benchmark is a rather convenient tool for measuring SSD speed characteristics on random non-compressible data and standard compressible data. Testing results showed the following speed characteristics:
consecutive read speed – 360 Mb/sec;
consecutive write speed – 180 Mb/sec;
random read speed 4 KB blocks – 32000 IOPS;
random write speed 4 KB blocks – 14500 IOPS.

OCZ Petrol 128 GB proved to show good speed index at all consecutive operations, with a bit modest index at random processes. At the same time, Everest controller employs data compaction algorithms at flash-memory writing operations. This implies that the very SSD model does not show any specific fluctuations when working with data of any type, demonstrating predictable and reiterated performance.

2. File replication speed is measured with the help of AS SSD benchmark (1.6.4237.30508 version). The replication is realized within the boundaries of one segment created on the wholesome SSD volume capacity. Testing results showed that OCZ Petrol manages with the voluminous data quite efficiently. Nevertheless, this model did not show the levelness of characteristics when working with various data.
