Overview of the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1080 Ti OC Video Card

The new flagship GeForce GTX 1080 Ti pleased its users with the excellent performance results. But along with the performance of the new flagship, its heat emission increased as well. The reference versions are equipped with a turbine-type cooler, which decently deals with the nominal mode only. If one wants to get more from the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, non-reference versions with powerful cooling are needed.

So, let’s consider suchlike card in this review: ROG STRIX GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB OC offers improved PCB design and cooling with three fans which is more efficient and powerful than all the previous versions from ASUS. Such will definitely be cooler, quieter and of course more powerful than the Founders Edition.

Equipment and Outlook

ASUS is supplied in a large box with the traditional for the Strix series design. The delivery kit is minimal. In addition to the mandatory disk with software, Velcro ties for fixing cables inside the case are worth noting.

The video adapter resembles STRIX-GTX1080-O8G-GAMING which is actually its predecessor. It is the same-looking massive device and a cooler with three fans. Its total length is 30 cm.

The rear side is covered with a metal plate with windows in the areas of large elements and fixing screws. A large emblem symbol on the side is equipped with backlighting.

ROG-STRIX-GTX1080TI-O11G-GAMING is thicker than previous ASUS video cards and takes up more than two expansion slots. The casing barely covers the massive radiator, which now has become even larger.

Along the video card body there are slits under which LED strips are stretched. This is combined with the illumination of the logo on the back of the device. A special software application ASUS Aura allows adjusting the color of the backlighting and changing it in a wide range. This gives n opportunity to choose the most enjoyable mode individually. Different blinking modes and other lighting effects can be set here as well.

In the corner two sockets for eight contacts instead of the usual combination of 6 + 8 are placed.

ASUS returned a DVI socket which is not available at the reference. It is complemented by two DisplayPorts and two HDMIs. The configuration is non-standard, but the HDMI pair simplifies the external devices switching with a VR headset. So the Strix combination of interface sockets is absolutely wonderful.

So, let’s study the features of the updated cooling system. The overall design has not undergone any major changes. The radiator is larger in size than the PCB. Three fans of 90 mm in diameter are mounted on top of it.

Previously, a single radiator was in contact with a graphics chip and VRM elements. Now the approach is slightly different. A large thick plate covers the entire board removing heat from the power components and memory chips. Above the zone of power transistors there is a thick gasket which is pressed against the external radiator. That is, there is no direct contact between the plate and the main radiator, but they can partially participate in the general process of heat exchange.

When examining the main radiator, two important points should be noted: a flat base without direct contact and an increased thickness in comparison with a radiator on the ASUS ROG GeForce GTX 1080. Six heat pipes are used.

The radiator height increased by 40%, which allowed making the total dispersion area larger. So the system which has already proved its effectiveness has become even better.

Direct contact was the only controversial decision in the old cooler design. It was impossible to realize the full contact of a small GPU crystal with all the heat pipes and small grooves formed between the tubes. Now, ASUS engineers used a different approach and put the tubes inside a large basement with a perfectly flat surface. Suchlike construction will ensure maximum tight contact with the chip.

The PCB is larger than the standard one of the video cards in this series. The design is similar to all the other top-end solutions from ASUS. Qualitative electronic components are soldered.

The power system of the graphics core has 10 phases, the GDDR5X memory is powered by two ones.

There are many sockets at the edge of the board. Coolers fans and backlighting are connected to the bottom ones. There are also two sockets for connecting external case fans, and thanks to ASUS FanConnect technology their speed will be adjusted depending on the video card temperature.

The heart of the video card is the GP102-350-K1-A1 chip, which in this case operates 3584 stream processors.

11 GB of memory is gathered by a similar number of GDВR5X microcircuits from Micron with the 6ZA77 D9VRL marking.

ASUS ROG Gaming video cards support three frequency profiles which allows a little balance between performance and cooling system noise level. Retail versions often work in the gaming mode by default. For ASUS ROG-STRIX-GTX1080TI-O11G-GAMING this is the base frequency of the 1569 MHz core with 1683 MHz Boost.

The difference in frequency between the profiles is really insufficient, switching between modes allows the utility ASUS GPU Tweak II. This application also provides ample opportunities for monitoring operational parameters and overclocking.

Practical tests have shown high efficiency of the updated cooler. When operating on an open stand in a room with a temperature of 21-22 ° C, the core of the ASUS ROG Strix card heats up to 66°C. This is an excellent result against the reference standard temperature of 84°C. At the same time, the fans spin up to 1400 rpm only creating a minimal noise. Such indicators are much better than those of GeForce GTX 1080 which once again proves how effective the changes in the cooler design have turned out to be.

Since the video card initially operates at higher frequencies, then opportunities for further overclocking are minimal. The base model manages to overclock the core to 1655 MHz with the peak Boost up to 2050 MHz. A further increase in frequencies leads to a stability drop. Memory can be overclocked to 12096 MHz.

The resulting frequencies seem to be as close as possible to those obtained earlier on the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti reference card. But the usual version with the peak Boost at 2050 MHz showss an average level of frequencies below 2000 MHz with drawdowns to 1962 MHz and even more. Here, after increasing the power limit, the real Boost does not fall below 2012 MHz, in some games holding the bar at 2025 MHz. That is, ASUS has a real advantage. And if the reference card copes with overclocking only in extremely noisy mode, then the cooler of ASUS ROG Strix allows managing it with just a small increase in the fans speed. When fixed at the speed of 1600 rpm, it allows even to lower the level of operating temperatures relative to the initial one, ensuring complete stability in operation with quite a modest noise level.

Conclusions

ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce GTX 1080 TI 11GB OC combines high performance with low heating and noise levels. Increased basic frequencies provide an additional acceleration of 5-8% if compared with the reference card, and powerful cooling maintains excellent thermal and noise characteristics. The updated ASUS cooler demonstrates extremely high efficiency in nominal, as well as in overclocking due to a larger radiator and a new basement. Improved PCB with a modified power system gives more overclocking opportunities and improves stability at higher frequencies.

The entire overclocking potential is easily realized on ASUS with little heating and noise which is absolutely impossible on the reference card. And ASUS will still be quieter and colder than the usual version even at maximum frequencies. Therefore, ASUS ROG-STRIX-GTX1080TI-O11G-GAMING is an excellent purchase for enthusiasts who want to get maximum performance in games with maximum comfort in operation.
