The Second Generation of Polaris: Introduction to the Radeon RX 570 Using the ASUS ROG Strix Video Card as an Example

Currently, the situation with the total dominance of NVIDIA in the segment of top-end graphics solutions has developed. AMD is unlikely to present its progressive Vega accelerators shortly. But a series of mid-level video cards based on GPU Polaris has already been developed. Their second generation is presented, so let’s start studying the new products.

Polaris 20 Based Video Cards

The updated line of video cards includes four models: Radeon RX 580, Radeon RX 570, Radeon RX 560 and Radeon RX 550. They are direct successors of similar models of the RX400 series; in particular, the Radeon RX 580/570 replaces the Radeon RX 480/470. So, let’s consider the changes in the new video cards in this review.

The Radeon RX 580 and Radeon RX 570 are based on the Polaris 20 graphics processor which has no major changes with respect to Polaris 10. This is the development of the AMD GCN architecture and its fourth implementation. The GPU counts 36 Compute Unit (CU) computational …

Overview of the Chieftec FI-03B Case

Ever since with the light touch of the VIA Technologies the Mini-ITX motherboard standard has entered the consumer market, ample opportunities have opened up for fans of compact computer systems. However, the main problems of the still new form factor were quickly identified then. The most painful among them were issues of components compatibility (which were all produced for a more common ATX format), the problem of their cooling and, of course, the complete absence of sane small cases capable of taking such systems in.

In solving problems with the chassis, the industry initially chose two parallel paths. On the one hand, tiny boxes supplied with an external power supply were put into production. The maximum that they were able to accept was the processors from VIA and Intel with TDP not more than 20 watts. On the other hand, cases where it would be possible to assemble a good game system based on the Mini-ITX motherboard were created. But in size, they often reached the …

Overview of the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1080 Ti OC Video Card

The new flagship GeForce GTX 1080 Ti pleased its users with the excellent performance results. But along with the performance of the new flagship, its heat emission increased as well. The reference versions are equipped with a turbine-type cooler, which decently deals with the nominal mode only. If one wants to get more from the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, non-reference versions with powerful cooling are needed.

So, let’s consider suchlike card in this review: ROG STRIX GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB OC offers improved PCB design and cooling with three fans which is more efficient and powerful than all the previous versions from ASUS. Such will definitely be cooler, quieter and of course more powerful than the Founders Edition.

Equipment and Outlook

ASUS is supplied in a large box with the traditional for the Strix series design. The delivery kit is minimal. In addition to the mandatory disk with software, Velcro ties for fixing cables inside the case are worth noting.

Overview of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Gaming Video Card

The NVIDIA Company continues to conquer new peaks of graphics performance. The latest high-profile novelties are video accelerators GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and Titan Xp. The second is an exclusive product with a small number manufactured and an extremely high price. But the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti will become the new flagship of mass production models which significantly raises the performance bar.

The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is manufactured using the GP102 GPU based on the Pascal architecture. This chip has previously become the basis for the super-powerful solution of Titan X (Pascal), and recently released even faster Titan Xp. The GP102 processor consists of six graphic clusters of five SM multiprocessors.

Configuration

In its full configuration, the GP102 has 3840 CUDA stream processors and 240 texture units. The memory bandwidth is increased to 384 bits due to 12 memory controllers. The crystal is produced on the basis of 16-nm process technology and has 12 billion …

Review of the Fractal Design Define Mini C Case

During its existence the Fractal Design Company has already created quite a large number of externally similar cases. Unprepared in technical matters, the buyer will clearly find it difficult to understand which one will suit him. After all, the internal structure differs quite much, and it is reflected just by a pair of letters in each model name.

Today’s review is dedicated to the Define Mini C case. The basic concept of its design is minimalism. It got rid of the extra 5.25" compartments, bulky racks of 3.5" hard drives (as, in fact, few people use more than two such drives). The manufacturer tried to reduce external dimensions as much as possible without compromising compatibility with standard components. And, following modern concepts, they covered the power supply with a casing, thus dividing the internal space into two parts.

Aerocool Cruisestar Advance Case Overview

Many manufacturers of budget-friendly PC cases adore expanding their line-up by a banal change of the plastic case kit without dramatic changes in the filling or framing structure of the chassis. The Aerocool Company is also saddening with this approach, although, for the sake of justice, it is worth noting that in recent years this has happened quite rarely. Nevertheless, the subject of today's review – the Cruisestar Advance is just the result of a change in appearance based on the simplest PGS-V series frames. Let’s see what the consequences of this metamorphosis from the point of view of the ordinary buyer are.

The Aerocool XPredator II Case Overview

The Aerocool XPredator II is an updated and refreshed version of the first XPredator case, which was released six years ago. The modification took into account the realities of modern components, although in the second iteration of the chassis there is still a touch of «muscularity» characteristic of those times when the motherboards of the XL-ATX format, video cards over 300 mm long or 1.5-kilogram processor cooling systems were common.

Currently, the requirements for case components characteristics are much more modest. But the excess capacity and power of the XPredator II cooling system are superfluous not for everyone, as a number of users actually need to build up a really large and hot system by the nature of their activities or hobbies.

Overview of the Power Supply Chieftec APS-1000CB Series A-135

Chieftec power supplies are one of the most popular brands on the domestic market, and it's not surprising, since the manufacturer has been on it for about 20 years. During this time, the decisions of the German brand have acquired both an army of admirers and opponents. The first like these blocks for the optimal price/quality ratio, while others are not satisfied with their consumer properties. It’s primarily because of a higher noise level than some competitors or more expensive products have. But with a limited budget, Chieftec becomes one of the main candidates for purchase, especially when building powerful systems, where the difference between the costs of blocks produced by different manufacturers can reach 50-150 dollars or even more.

In this review, we will consider a 1000-watt Chieftec device belonging to the A-135 series, the hallmark of which is a 135-mm fan and a modular cable connection for the periphery. Also representatives of this line meet the requirements …

Overview of the ASUS Prime X370-Pro Motherboard

Four- and six-core models of Ryzen 5 Summit Ridge processors have already appeared on sale, and almost everything is known about the speed and overclocking potential of the eight-core models (R7). The new Ryzen series processors are actually system-on-a-chip (SOC). Integration of the memory controller, functions of which have been once performed by the north bridge, is not something surprising.

Much more interesting is the south bridge, responsible for working with the periphery. Now such processors have basic capabilities for connecting, for example, drives, and they also have several USB outputs. In other words, most of the functions of motherboards have now lost their habitual form.

The so-called «chipset» is a hub; it greatly extends the capabilities of the computer. In fact, those fixes that many users expect are in the plane of UEFI interaction with the CPU (SOC) itself and are unlikely to rest on the structural component of the board.

AMD X370 is the senior …

Overview of the LogicPower 7777 Case

In the last couple of years, the chassis with the division of the interior into two zones has become very popular. In the lower part, as a rule, there is a power supply unit and drives, and in the upper part – all the other components. Almost all manufacturers now have similar models. This fashion did not pass around LogicPower, where it was embodied in the case of LP 7777 from the Perfect series.
