Synology to Release 5-Bay DiskStation DS1515 NAS

Synology, a renowned manufacturer of network solutions, has launched yet another NAS, tailored to business-oriented customers with thirst for a comprehensive data storage, synchronization and backup processes. The heart of DiskStation DS1515 is Annapurna Labs Alpine AL-314 platform with 1.4 GHz processor and 2 GB of DDR3 RAM. The greenhorn is equipped with a couple of USB 3.0 ports, a pair of eSATA ports, and a single 4-port gigabit Ethernet controller.



Synology DiskStation 1515 features five screwless bays for 3.5-/2.5-inch HDDs which support hot swapping option. The total capacity of all drives might not exceed 40 TB (5x 8 TB). This storage supports the creation of varied RAID configurations (0, 1, 5, 6, 10) as well as JBOD. The possibility to exert an entire control over power consumption is thought to be one of the key advantages of this model. The growth of laptop shipments in the second quarter was 5%

Global laptop shipments have faced with glut stocks in March and a weakening global economy in May. That caused the situation of reaching a growth of supply in the second quarter of the year only for 5% compared with the previous, and it fell by 1.8% compared with this period year ago. Shipments totalled just over 50 million units, according to analysts.



Numbers of Acer and Lenovo laptop shipments were at the average level on the world market in comparison the first quarter of the year. Shipments of mobile PCs from HP, Dell and Toshiba have fallen to 4-7%. Most of all with the increase of supply by 36% managed its shipment the ASUS Company.


It is interesting that HP may soon lose its title of leader in the laptop market — China's Lenovo breathes down its neck, lagging behind only with 500,000 units. Synology Announces a New DiskStation DS214 NAS

Synology Inc., a well-known Taiwanese manufacturer of high-end network solutions, announces the release of a two-disk NAS, entitled DiskStation DS214. The storage is targeting budget-oriented home and small business customers who long for high performance and stability of system operation. This NAS comes with two 3.5-inch drives, each featuring 4 TB capacity. Herein, the drives are mounted without any tools, by means of rubber shims only.



The DiskStation DS214 is differentiated by a quite low power consumption index. The storage consumes not more than 20W on full load conditions, with the minimal index of 3.65W in sleep mode. This NAS model is based on a two-core processor, running at 1.06 GHz. Its layout also embraces 512 MB of DDR3 memory, gigabit Ethernet port, and a twain of USB ports (3.0 version). Moreover, the case is equipped with a set of LEDs for drives, network, and NAS activity.
