Built-in DAS Raidon SR261-2S-S2R Review

Individuals who got used to work with little amount of information can barely understand those people who are obliged to work with loads of data on daily basis. That is the major reason why they choose different devices for data storage. The first group of users will probably use flash-drives, while the second group will try to acquire a device that could manage huge information, such as NAS and DAS solutions. Today Raidon, a developer of efficient storage solutions, offers the customers, who long for safe and high-performance storage device, a new built-in DAS model, codenamed SR261-2S-S2R. This is a two-disk storage that is able to fully satisfy the needs of the targeted audience.

Delivery Set and Specifications

Raidon SR261-2S-S2R is delivered in a large cardbox which contains a set of components vital for layout and operation. Thereby, a customer will see SATA cable, a set of screws for hard drives fixture, CD with dedicated software, COM adapter and cable, and helpful user guidelines.

This DAS model is developed as an internal drive based on Raidon SR2045 chip. It is compatible with Windows, Mac OS and Linux operational systems. It takes two 5.25 inch bays and is predestined for the installation of 3.5 inch drives. The maximal capacity of a single drive equals to 3 TB, while the overall array volume might achieve 6 TB. SR261-2S-S2R employs SATA II 3.0 Gb/sec interface and supports disk hot swapping mode. The device is able to work in RAID0 and RAID1 storage modes and develop the data transfer speed of 300 MB/sec.

Raidon SR261-2S-S2R is equipped with a display and dedicated indicators which signalize about any malfunction, power supply and some other information. Cooling system is represented by 60 mm fan. The device also accommodates temperature and fan operation sensors. Power supply is realized via Molex 4-pin socket.

Integration

DAS model SR261-2S-S2R is a container for the installation of two hard drives. Planar frontal panel permits the user to install this DAS into chassis with the opening clipboard doors. The customer won't find any difficulties while installing this DAS into the chassis thanks to the special eight perforations at each side of the casing. Drive slides are metallic, except for their frontal part which is made of plastic; the drives are fixed with the help of standard screws that are present in the nominal delivery set.

The display reflects all the information about DAS operation, including operational status, mode, error types, etc. The integrated indicators serve the assisting means in identifying the problem. The internal framework unveils a built-in circuit board, a fan and air ventilation grids.

The rear panel is peculiar for the availability of a single SATA port for the connection with the motherboard, a couple of Molex sockets for the enabling of power supply, and three-pin socket for the activation of fan which, in fact, is a RS232 COM port. There are corresponding cables in the delivery kit, empowering their connection to the expansion plank and to the motherboard. In addition, there is a crosspiece for the selection of necessary RAID array.

Testing

Testing results proved that Raidon SR261-2S-S2R is ready to cope with all claimed and alloted assignments. The display shows correct data about every activity including Rebuilt mode, showing the progress of data restoration. If there appear any problems with the hard drive, the display immediately notifies about the type of error. One of the beneficial features ascribed to this model is that the user will get an e-mail notification about the error (on appropriate settings); this allows the user to instantly react and efficiently remove the error.
Writing and reading speeds differ dramatically in various RAID working modes. Thus, when the customer selects RAID1 mode, the device achieves approximately 100-100 Mb/sec on writing and reading activities. When selecting RAID0, the situation improves: 200 Mb/sec — Read speed and 180 Mb/sec – Write speed.
