HDD Seagate BarraCuda Pro 10 TB - Fresh Review

Foreword
Now it's hard to imagine, but in 2000, hard drives with a capacity of 10 GB were considered normal. But even then the words "Seagate" and "BarraCuda" were well known and symbolized quality and reliability. Seagate retained its reputation to this day, when due to high-speed Internet access, the lack of hard disk space became a problem affecting almost all of us.

For those who remember ten-gigabyte times, the output of the new Barracuda hard drive is a thousand times more impressive - 10 terabytes. It's still the same usual size - all this incredible amount of information can be saved in a standard 3.5-inch desktop computer slot. It’s real magic!

Closer View
The Seagate BarraCuda Pro can be found of different amout of memory – from 2TB to 10TB.
All the models of the series offer 220 MB/s of sequential throughput and 4.16ms of average latency.
The BarraCuda Pro comes in a standard 3.5" form factor with a 6Gb/s SATA interface.

This hard drive runs on 7200 RPM SATA III (6 GB/s) and is based on Helium technology, which is used today only in top-end high-performance solutions. This means that the rotation of the discs passes with minimal vibration, less power is used for their operation, the HDD is much less heated and consumes almost 2 times less energy. And the wear of the internal mechanics should be more than 20% less than when using the AIR technology. Consequently, such disks will be less likely to fail and work more stable, and in general, users will feel much more comfortable when using such HDD.

Every HDD in BarraCuda family comes with Seagate's Multi-Tier Caching Technology (MTC). The given technology increases HDD performance by applying intelligent layers of NAND, DRAM, or media cache. Our reviewed drive doesn't use a NAND component.

The BarraCuda Pro works with an Avago drive controller.

(Hard drives use an address translation layer which is close to solid-state drives. Now Seagate uses that section of the platter an extension of the cache hierarchy; it holds a copy of the data resident in the volatile SRAM and DRAM caches. That allows the drive to safely cache user data in the volatile memory, which in turn can be used more effectively to boost performance. Seagate calls the sliver of high-speed disk the Media Cache.)

Price and Warranty
The Seagate BarraCuda Pro 2TB sells for $129.99 and the cost increases as capacity raises. The 10TB model we are talking today, a customer will find for $399. Other specifications of each device remain the same. The performance and endurance specification are equal.

Seagate BarraCuda Pro 10TB operates stably at temperatures from 0 to 60 degrees Celsius, which allows this HDD to function normally in areas with high temperatures (if you decide to use it as a data warehouse somewhere in a non-home rather than factory environment - but in this case, it is better to look at models with additional protection, since here the board is located from the bottom and is open to external influences). The average temperature of the device under load is about 30 degrees. The hard disk is designed for an estimated load of 300 TB per year and should not cause any problems with 300,000 full rewriting cycles. A 5-year warranty from the manufacturer should give you the assurance that none of your data will be lost or damaged.

This, of course, is just numbers - in fact, all the numbers above mean that if you plug a drive into a home system that is near a radiator or convector heater, and you'll be able to download, delete, record, and play games all day long, then all the hard drive must work stably and nothing will happen to it. And it will continue at least 5 years. But many HDDs from Seagate, especially samples from the expensive segment, work stably for 10-15 years, so there is a high probability that the Seagate BarraCuda Pro 10TB will please you for a long time. And in the long run it will fully pay itself back in the first couple of years of operation.

Who will need it?
Despite the record capacity and the standard form factor, the 10 Terabyte hard drive of the BarraCuda Pro is also extremely unpretentious in terms of power consumption - it needs only 6.8 watts. Considering that in modern computers, the accessories often require the power unit to supply serious power, it's nice to know that when you purchase an additional capacious hard drive, you will not compromise the power of the system.

This hard drive is ideal for representatives of creative professions, fans of anime and television series and, of course, gamers with ever-expanding Steam-libraries. It’s extremely useful for gamers: if now there is an increasing popularity of cloud storage of files and streaming video, in the case of PC games there is no alternative to local storage of information (except for cloud services that work controversially and require money for subscription). Agree, to have a large part of your library on the hard disk for quick access is very convenient, and if you deal with the gameplay records during the floppies or streams, then extra space is more than useful. Nowadays, when the requirements for video quality are high, and one game, as a rule, takes several tens of gigabytes of hard disk space, 10 terabytes will be just what a gamer needs.
And for the safety of data, you do not have to worry: for each hard drive a five-year warranty is extended.
