The Samsung vendor has reported start-up of the high-volume production of the world most capacious SAS SSD – namely Samsung PM1643. Its volume comes to 30.72 TB, which is twice bigger than the figure, assigned to the previous leader in the field (15.36 TB), introduced in March 2016.
To reach such capacity the manufacturer utilized 64-layer 3-bit V-NAND chipsets of 512 Gb, packed into 1 TB stacks, consisting of 16 pieces. There are 32 stacks inside Samsung PM1643. Total capacity allows storing 5,700 movies, each taking the volume of 5 GB.
The novelty features the enhanced performance rate due to the usage of the 12 Gbps SAS interface and 40 GB DDR4 memory as cash. Thus, sequential read and write speeds reach 2,100 and 1,700 MBps, which is 3–4 times higher, than in the case of standard 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Random read and write velocities stay at the level of 400,000 and 50,000 IOPS in respect.
