ASUS Designo MZ27AQ - Review of a Delicacy

Introduction

In the continuous flow of gamer monitors’ announcements, the fact that they are a rather narrow segment of the market is practically lost - the ordinary buyer is more interested in universal models that are suitable for all tasks, and at the same time will not cost the amount exceeding the cost of the system unit. One of such "multimedia" monitors, as they are also called, is the ASUS Designo MZ27AQ, whose distinctive feature is an external subwoofer. And just have a look at its delicate forms – a real pleasure.

Designing solution

ASUS MZ27AQ belongs to the "designer" line of ASUS monitors, in which the appearance was always given special significance - it is not surprising therefore that it looks really good, although it is quite traditional for this line. Very slim body (about 7 mm in the main part and about 5 cm at the bottom block with electronics), frameless screen design (in the included view around the image is visible a small frame, about 6 mm wide, hidden behind the protective coating of the screen). The case uses a combination of black and graphite matte surfaces. The stand is made in the form of an elegant ring of metal - in general, the monitor looks stern and stylish, and as for its rather big 27 inches, it is very compact and even elegant.

Unfortunately, the stand allows you to change only the angle of the screen - height adjustment, left-right rotation and transition to portrait mode this model does not support. All connectors are in a shallow niche in the right lower part of the rear side of the case and are oriented horizontally. There are no options for disguising or at least ordering the connected cables. There are DisplayPort and two HDMI ports from the video inputs. Additionally, there is an audio output to the headphones and a connector for connecting an external speaker - subwoofer.

Control

To navigate through the menu, there is one four-way joystick, there are no additional buttons for the ASUS MZ27AQ. Pressing it or deviating to either side causes a quick menu in which you can adjust the volume, adjust the blue light filter, turn off the power and call up the main menu.

In it, the first item is a branded selection of Splendid video modes (landscape, theatrical, gaming, sRGB, etc.), followed by a blue filter (reducing its share in the backlight, which makes the image warmer and more enjoyable for long readings from the screen). Next - "Color", here you can adjust the brightness, contrast and choose the color temperature. In the item "Image", you can enable matrix overclocking, select the screen format, activate the proprietary VividPixel image enhancement technology and enable the adaptive frequency. Next comes the sound setting of the built-in acoustics - the volume level and the choice of one of the sound modes. Also in the menu there is a possibility to switch between video sources manually. And in the last point the system settings are focused: OSD parameters, menu language, power indicator operation, information about the current video mode, resetting the settings to the factory settings, etc.

Special Features

The ASUS Designo MZ27AQ uses an 8-bit 27-inch IPS panel with the 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels (the pixel density is 110 PPI at the same time). Despite the fact that the monitor is not declared as a gaming device, and the maximum update frequency is standard, 60 Hz, the manufacturer still implemented support for the technology of adaptive frequency AMD FreeSync (it works when connected via DisplayPort in the range of 40-60 Hz).

A distinctive feature of ASUS MZ27AQ is the acoustic system, developed in conjunction with Harman Kardon - it consists of two built-in speakers with a power of 6 W each and an external subwoofer (5 W). Of course, one should not expect deep bass from it (the "low" sound that he managed to publish in our express test started at 130-140 Hz, and there was almost no audible sound), but the mid-range with its help is reproduced noticeably better than without it. Solely the built-in speakers are quite suitable in the absence of quality headphones – as for Youtube videos, background music during work and even short gaming sessions.

The minimum brightness is very low, only 26 cd/m² - this is enough for comfortable work even in the total darkness. The maximum brightness (the average value for measurements at 35 points of the screen) was very high, as for the desktop monitor - 365 cd/m² (as a rule, in other models this figure is at the level of 250-300), with the difference between the brightest part central area), and the least bright was slightly less than 70 cd/m².

The company's set of video modes Splendid contains the standard options for ASUS monitors - sRGB, Landscape, Theater, Game, etc. The sRGB mode offers a slightly higher range (up to 2.3) and a slightly lowered temperature, which gives a slightly warmer hue, the color coverage covers 95% of sRGB space and 68% of Adobe RGB.

This enjoyment will cost you around 420$.
