DevID : : Ports

Connection of external peripherals to a computer would be impossible without special adapters, made in the form of a subsidiary ports the I/o on the motherboard. These ports are in constant interaction with the microprocessor system which controls the exchange of data between the connected device and the hardware.

Some adapters are designed to transmit data to the system (e.g., keyboard), and other control devices (for example, reading information from the disc, activation of the indicators). In both cases, for the transactions meet the drivers for port I/o.

Adapters I/o are serial and parallel. Serial devices transmit data bits on the pair of wires one after another, and parallel – transmit the packet of the multiple data bits simultaneously over parallel wires. Structurally, the interfaces or ports are implemented on multiple chips or on a single large chip, it is localized on the expansion card or motherboard.

To connect the device to the serial port of a type typically use a 25-pin and 9-pin connectors (DB- 25 and DB-9). Ports of this type are the interfaces USB and FireWire. Last provide the highest data transfer speed, if you download a driver for port I/o for a particular device.

Connecting external devices to the parallel port of the type produced by a 25-bit connector, D-Shell 36-pin Centronics. The maximum cable length, which must use twisted pair, and the conductors enclosed in the screen, usually reaches 2-3 meters.
